Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Anthony Lister

While walking the Wynwood Walls area, we noticed the always attention-grabbing Anthony Lister (filmed) doing his thing in front of a crowd of people. Using his recognizable loose style, the Australian artist took advantage of the long wall to paint a lady on her side overlaid with some of the frames that he has used before. Upcoming: Sam Flores – “A Light in the Darkness” @ Fifty24SF

Tonight in San Francisco, Sam Flores will be opening a new show at Fifty24SF entitled A Light in the Darkness. Coinciding with the Lower Haight Art Walk, the exhibition will feature new paintings on canvas and drawings from the locally-based artist. As you can see from the preview image above, his signature characters and their animal friends continue to hold an important part of his imagery. Basel Week Miami ’14: Pulse

While in town for Basel Week Miami, we made sure to head north a little ways to attend the Pulse held at their new location – Indian Beach Park. The tenth edition of the  event featured some familiar names as well as many artists new to us. One of these was the sculptural works of Jorge Mayet (seen above) at the Galeria Horrach Moya booth. Gallery D406 in Modena, Italy, opened a two man show by 2501 and Francesco Igory Deiana on November 22nd titled Involving Doubts. While sharing similar ideas, concepts and even elements of their visual languages, their abstract works are significantly different. Taking one of his most recognizable series of works to the next level, Daniel Arsham has created a site specific installation at Locust Projects coinciding with Basel Week Miami. Entitled Welcome to the Future, the excavation site created by the New York-based artist in the gallery’s floor holds thousands of what he calls “future relics,” objects of today’s time but made to look like calcified artifacts through his special technique. Every year during Basel Week Miami, AM always spends some time in the Wynwood district checking out the activity as street and graffiti artists put in the time to beautify the area. For 2014, the predominant facilitators in the area, Wynwood Walls, decided to focus on The Art of Collaboration. Basel Week Miami ’14: Untitled.

Focusing on emerging and midcareer contemporary art (over 200 exhibiting artists from 18 different countries), the Untitled. satellite fair was back for Basel Week Miami with their tent situated nicely on the beach. Basel Week Miami ’14: SCOPE

One of the favorite fairs we visited during Basel Week Miami was SCOPE and its high concentration of art from the Low Brow, New Contemporary, and Street Art movements. Featured at the fair were pieces from the Dean Collection (from collector Swizz Beatz), a new sculptural piece (based on recent print) from Cleon Peterson in the entryway, an installation from Swoon, a Juxtapoz stand, and Heineken House live painting. Basel Week Miami ’14: Damien Hirst @ Paul Stolper Gallery

Mirroring an exhibition (covered) several months ago at the Paul Stolper Gallery in London was a display of Damien Hirst’s oversized pharmaceuticals at their Art Basel Miami booth. The Schizophrenogenesis works consist of sculptural renditions that are an extension of his pill cabinet pieces as well as his fascination with the medical field as well as screen prints.
