This Thursday night, July 17th, it’s time again for Joshua Liner Gallery to put on their Summer Mixer group exhibition, a look at some artists making their debut with the New York showspace. Included in this show are works from Andrew Schoultz, Erin M. Riley, Guy Yanai, Kristen Schiele, Michael Theodore, Sam Friedman, and Robert Larson (whose work can be seen above featuring repurposed discarded tobacco packaging that he finds on the streets). Upcoming: Kelsey Brookes – “Sleep: The Science and the Mystery” @ Library Street Collective

On July 25th, Library Street Collective in Detroit will be hosting new works from Kelsey Brookes collectively entitled Sleep: The Science and the Mystery. Drawing on his past life as a biochemist, the San Diego based artist paints chemical and molecular structures with loosely defined abstract shapes and patterns. The resulting psychedelic swirls can put the viewer almost into a trance-like state if one stares at the work too long, mesmerized by the vortex of vibrant colors. Discuss this show here. In The Darkness of Mere Being, Chie Yoshii’s first solo show, opened at Roq la Rue in Seattle on July 3rd. Titled after a quote from the great Carl Jung, the art explores many of the Swiss psychotherapist’s hypotheses about the psyche and our subconscious – rich colors emerging from the darkened forest to subjects bathed in moon light. Ukrainian art duo Interesni Kazki are currently in Italy where they are adding the final touches to their newest body of work for the upcoming Inter Arma Silent Musae show with Studio Cromie. Currently at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles, Japanese artist Kenichi Yokono has a show on view entitled The New Suburbs. The new collection of painted wood carvings are a continuation of what he presented with the same gallery back in 2011 (covered), and are fine examples of Yokono’s modern take on traditional woodcutting. Eight years after comedy giant Dave Chapelle walked off the set of the third season the Chappelle’s Show and into the veil of private life, he made a triumphant return to the spotlight of the Big Apple at the historic Radio City Music Hall recently.
