Recap: Yoskay Yamamoto – “House of Daydreamers” @ Giant Robot 2

Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles recently closed out a show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) entitled House of Daydreamers. The exhibition highlighted the locally-based artist’s diverse range of works including paintings, installations, and wood sculptures. The title of the show summarizes nicely some of the dreamy imagery that we have come to love from him, along with more literal interpretations. More photos from the opening can be seen below and on Hi-Fructose. Photo credit: Hi-Fructose. Discuss Yoskay Yamamoto here.

Showing: ROA – “PROJECTUM 06” @ StolenSpace Gallery

Currently showing at the StolenSpace Gallery in London through July 4th is an exhibition from ROA entitled PROJECTUM 06. The installation and new body of work featured his dissected portrayals of wildlife from the places he has traveled and reflects the work on the street from the Belgium-based artist. As per his style, many of his pieces have interactive aspects and deceptive visual props like mirrors which were enjoyed by all as they walked through the gallery. Photo credit: Paul Whitehouse. Openings: Andy Kehoe – “Inner Mystic” @ Roq la Rue

It’s been a few years since Andy Kehoe’s last show at Roq la Rue, but to say he’s been busy would be an understatement. With several shows since then, the Pittsburgh-based painter continues to hone his skills and evolve as an artist. Woodland animals and anthropomorphized creatures are a mainstay in his work, but his use of resin has really raised the level of dimension, quite literally.  Layers of clear resin are poured into a sealed frame, with each layer painted in a unique fashion, making […]

Previews: Pedro Matos “Four Seasons” @ TMG (Teatro Municipal da Guarda)

Four Seasons is a new solo exhibition by Pedro Matos featuring four new oil paintings. Showing at the TMG (Teatro Municipal da Guarda) in Portugal, the body of work “deals with the ideas of ephemerality and decaying aesthetics present in the urban landscape, a recurrent theme in the artist’s practice.” The Portuguese artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including The University of Arizona Museum of Art (Tucson), Philips de Pury (London), Goss-Michael Foundation (Dallas), The National Army Museum (London), Martha Otero […]

Openings: Redd Walitzki – “When We Break” @ Roq la Rue

Redd Walitzki didn’t have to go to far for her first solo show at Roq la Rue as her studio is mere blocks away from the gallery. When We Break intertwines seemingly vulnerable subjects with nature and small animals, as flowers erupt from the skin and melt into the milky backgrounds. Some manage to fly out of the panel itself. Aiding in the scenery are intricate panels cut with lasers and what isn’t better with lasers? A few even have adornments making them into three-dimensional displays. […]

Showing: James “Dalek” Marshall @ Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

James Marshall, or better known as Dalek (interviewed) by some of his fans, recently finished a series of murals at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Painting his distinctive color spectrum style throughout the institution including the SMoCA Lounge, Store@SMoCA, and a mural (co-commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art) in the outdoor courtyard wall that leads to SMoCA’s permanent James Turrell Skyspace, the Hurley affiliated artist and designer certainly left his mark. Basel Week HK ’14: How & Nosm – “Sake Art Bottle” @ Yardbird

During the craziness that was Art Basel Hong Kong, one of the events we attended was How & Nosm’s debut & celebration of their Sake Art Bottle at HK’s Yardbird as well as the unveiling of two site specific murals. As previewed, this unique collaboration project fused the restaurant’s artist sake line with the iconic color & styling of the German born twins. The project featured a silkscreen process that imprints the artwork by the brothers on the front of the collectible bottle. Hand-signed and hand-numbered, the bottle was produced in a […]

Coming up in October, Antony Micallef returns (see 2012) to show with Lazarides at a yet to be disclosed popup location in London. I Love That You Love What I Love will see the gifted painter reveal provocative new large-scale works alongside a selection of studies often featuring his distorted and unearthly figures that speak to what lies deep inside his psyche. Sample your eyes on these shots from the studio for now as we head closer to the opening. Photo credit: Ian Cox & Lazarides. Discuss […]

Openings: JR – “The Close Up” @ Magda Danysz (Shanghai)

During AM‘s recent trip we stopped by the streets of Shanghai to participate in the phenomenon that is the Inside / Out photobooth truck. Next to follow that up, we stopped by Magda Danysz to catch JR’s (interviewed) latest show. Entitled The Close Up, this exhibition marks the return of the French artist to the gallery’s Shanghai location after four years (see the first show here). The works range from his grand photographs taken from projects around the world to his wood impressions to his haunting eye pieces […]

Upcoming: Daniel Arsham – “The Future is Always Now” @ Galerie Perrotin (Paris)

Running concurrently and staggered with the current G I R L exhibition at Galerie Perrotin in Paris starting Thursday night (June 12th) will be a new show from Daniel Arsham. The Future is Always Now will be the New York-based artist’s ninth solo with the gallery and will feature about 20 artworks centered thematically around music, an interest seen previously with his collaboration with Pharrell. Fans of Arsham will want to stop by to see his unique views on future archeology with his eroded sculptures of […]
