Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Revival” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The Joshua Liner Gallery in New York recently opened a solo exhibition from Kris Kuksi entitled Revival. The intricate and complex sculptural works from the Kansas-based artist plays a perfect contrast to the deceptively simple works from Riusuke Fukahori, who is concurrently showing in the same gallery. Kuksi’s mixed media assemblages explore the dark sides of the human psyche with ornate representations created from model kits and other materials that he has re-appropriated. His works need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated, but for those unable […]

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Falling Back to Earth” @ Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)

As you probably surmised from our comprehensive coverage of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exhibition in Los Angeles last year, we quite enjoy the Chinese artist’s explosive techniques and inventive installations. That’s why if you will be near Queensland in the coming months, you need to make time to stop by Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Although there are other works in the show like Head On, a stream of suspended wolves, the highlight of the show is a new installation piece entitled Heritage. Although the message of the piece featuring a […]

Openings: Riusuke Fukahori – “The Painted Breath” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last month, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea presented all new works from Yokohama-based artist Riusuke Fukahori in his New York solo debut. The self-described goldfish fanatic keeps many of them around his studio for inspiration as well as considers them a metaphor for his life. Utilizing a resin technique that took over 8 years to perfect, the layered pieces almost look too real to be paintings, especially when presented in containers that are often associated with the fish in real life. Take a look at more photos as well […]

Showing: Alex Prager – “Face in the Crowd” @ Corcoran Gallery of Art

If you will be in Washington DC in the upcoming several months, make sure you stop by the Corcoran Gallery of Art to take a look at Alex Prager’s new exhibition – Face in the Crowd. For her first solo museum show in the United States, the Los Angeles-based photographer and filmmaker has presented an ambitious new series of works that deal with the idea of crowds and their effects on individuals as well utilizing this new direction to confront her own fear of crowds. On display […]

Openings: AJ Fosik – “Against The Infinite” @ Jonathan LeVine

A couple weeks ago, AM stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out new works from AJ Fosik collectively entitled Against The Infinite. Inspired by The Denial of Death, a 1973 Pulitzer Prize-winning work of psychology and philosophy by Ernest Becker, the new sculptural works explore the idea that humanity has an “inherent struggle between its dualistic nature—a physical self and a symbolic self.” Along with free-standing works, there is also an installation piece from the Portland-based artist that is comprised of 30 individual animal faces […]

Streets: Vhils x Pixel Pancho (Lisbon)

With some recent articles, we have introduced to you several public murals arranged by the Underdogs platform in Lisbon as well as some gallery shows. We now have another street piece to share with you in the same vein – a collaboration between Vhils and Pixel Pancho. The joint wall saw the locally-based Vhils mix his chiseled technique with the Italian Pixel Pancho’s robotic imagery leading an interesting interaction of disparate styles. We have some photos here of Viveros’ working […]

David McCracken – “Diminish and Ascend” @ Sculpture by the Sea

In Bondi, Australia, at the annual Sculpture by the Sea festival, David McCracken had a piece on view entitled Diminish and Ascend. The steps made from aluminum jut out on the side of a hill facing the sea and plays with perspectives to make it look like a never-ending path into the sky. Take a look at photos of the piece in different lighting and at various angles below… Photo credit: Paul David (front image), the rest specified at the bottom of image. Via My Modern Met.
