El Mac x Prada – “In the Heart of the Multitude” Project

Last month during Milan Fashion Week, American artist El Mac was asked by Prada to participate in the In the Heart of the Multitude project. Guided by themes of beauty, femininity, and power, the LA-based street muralist created three murals that were used as the backdrop for the Spring/Summer ’14 Prada Women’s fashion show (see video below). Collectively, he entitled them Sueños y Polvo de Estrellas (Dreams and Stardust) and shared that they were inspired by the work of Alphonse Mucha. Discuss El Mac here.

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “The Standard Rendez-Vous” @ Zidoun & Bossuyt

With his exhibition Palimpsest at Harvard’s Reischauer Institute (covered) still on view, the always ambitious Tomokazu Matsuyama  (interviewed) opens The Standard Rendez-Vous at Zidoun & Bossuyt in Luxembourg. With the new show, we find Matsu pushing his unique combination of abstract, pop and traditional Japanese styles ever forward. Upcoming: Billy Norrby – “The Stone Like” @ CHG Circa

This Saturday night, October 26th, Billy Norrby will be opening his exhibition at CHG Circa entitled The Stone Like. For his first solo with the gallery, the New York-painter brings a new series of work that explores the “state between gradual petrification and hopeful rejuvenation.” His characters often appear to be in deep contemplation, on the precipice of some important decision hanging in the balance. Showing: Claudio Ethos – “Intuitions sur le Hasard” @ Galerie Itinerrance

Last Friday, the Galerie Itinerrance in Paris presented all new works from Claudio Ethos entitled Intuitions sur le Hasard. Featuring paintings, drawings, and wall murals, the Brazilian street artist’s French fans were treated to his special surreal aesthetic. Beautifully rendered, his portraits of distorted characters mirrored closely what we have come to expect from his public art. Previews: Jeff Depner – ‘Variations: Black Napkins’ @ Nancy Margolis Gallery

Vancouver-based artist Jeff Depner opens his debut New York solo exhibition this week at Nancy Margolis Gallery. Depner is renowned for his highly graphical, abstract compositions and his use of layers, textures, colour and repetition of geometric elements create a visual feast. Previews: Do Ho Suh @ Lehmann Maupin (Hong Kong)

On November 14th, Lehmann Maupin’s Hong Kong location will be opening a new show featuring the works of Do Ho Suh. For his first solo in the SAR, the Korean artist will be continuing his Specimen series of works where he recreates ethereal reproductions of various appliances from his New York apartment. Previews: Brendan Monroe – “Turning” @ Galerie LJ

Coinciding this week with the start of the FIAC art fair in Paris, Galerie LJ will opening Brendan Monroe’s (interviewed) latest solo show tomorrow (October 22). Entitled Turning, the exhibition will include a series of new paintings on paper and wood sculptures will continue the move towards abstraction in his recent work with imagery exploring his fascination with nature and its organic intricacies. Openings: Beyond Eden 2013

Last weekend, the fourth Beyond Eden art fair opened its doors at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. Great crowds of art lovers showed up to support the various galleries (Thinkspace, C.A.V.E Gallery, Copro Gallery, and Spoke Art) and the artists represented. Some highlights were as special presentation recognizing Greg Escalante’s contributions to the LA art scene, the first showing of Chet Zar’s Ego Death project, as well as the Bird’s Eye View and Wild At Heart II group exhibitions. Moniker Art Fair, one of the events on the week’s busy schedule in London, opened with a private view on the 17th of October. Sharing a venue with Other Art Fair, these two events attracted a huge mass of art collectors, enthusiast, gallery owners and artists. On October 26th, the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City will be opening a new show from Ron English (featured) entitled Popagandastan. Presenting a new series of surreal paintings, the exhibition re-introduces Angelenos to some of his signature characters such as the neurotic Ronnnie Rabbbit, Combrats, Snappers, Wolves, Sheep, Quacks, Buddha Burgers, and of course Cowgirls.
