Jonathan Yeo Paints Damien Hirst

Several months ago, we told you about a big solo show coming up from Jonathan Yeo at the National Portrait Gallery in London. A new image has been released leading up to the opening on September 11th that reveals one of the subjects of Yeo’s contemporary portraiture as Damien Hirst. Wearing a chemical suit and equipped with a gas mask, the artist is sitting in a display case and “it’s not entirely clear if he is making something or whether he is being pickled in one of […]

Upcoming: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Robot and donut enthusiast Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be opening a solo show at Corey Helford Gallery on August 10th, his fifth with the Culver City showspace. Unlike his last show (covered) which featured his old school mechanical characters in the natural setting, the new paintings depict them in the city along with their dependable fried dessert friends. After a couple showings in Los Angeles (here & here), A Place Procurred From Our Yesteryears will build on the delicate portraiture we have seen from her in the past with new acrylic & colored pencil pieces as well as some sketches. The imagery this time seems to be exploring the relationships between her characters and urban space as well as its implications. Discuss […]

Currently on view at Martha Otero Gallery and presented by Converse and Union Los Angeles is a photo exhibition and first edition book release, exploring the social and physical themes of Los Angeles and its neighborhoods by photographer Michael Shields. Taken from inside a LAPD helicopter, Shields’ photographs focus on the physical environment of the greater Los Angeles area and on the resulting social patterns within the city, rather than the beach and glamor, fun-in-the-sun summer shots typically taken of LA. Through these wide shots […]

Thursday night (August 1st) at Spoke Art, Scott Scheidly will expanding his ongoing pink portrait series with all new works for his debut solo show, The Pinks, with the gallery. As seen in his participation in ArtPadSF the Scope Art Fair, the Orlando-based painter explores the cultural and social implications of color and the associated preconceptions by re-imagining recognizable macho characters and infamous historical figures (i.e.: making a mockery of Ayatollah Khomeini, religious leader of a country that is well known for persecution of the LGBT community). Discuss Scott Scheidly […]
