Frieze Week NYC ’13: Frieze Art Fair – First Look

Frieze returned to New York City this weekend, and again put on an top-notch art fair that challenges the dominance of The Armory Show. Like last year, the event was held on scenic Randall’s Island and featured many of the world’s most respected galleries and artists. We visited the fair multiple times over the weekend, and will post about specific booths that caught our eye. But first, here’s a general overview of some of what we enjoyed from Frieze NYC 2013.

German photographer Nils Müller recently published his second book titled Vandals with the official release on the May 1st, which will be followed by a gallery show at Ruttkowski68 (Cologne, Germany) opening on May 24th. Similar to his last book Blütezeit, published back in 2008, this latest volume covers the rarely exposed lives of urban vandals, and is released in regular and limited edition (limited to 500 signed copies now available for pre-order). Coming up on May 16th, Galerie Wolfsen in Denmark will be opening a new solo show from the Los Angeles-based El Mac. Upcoming: Fuco Ueda @ Lower Akihabara

We haven’t seen a showing of Fuco Ueda’s work stateside for a while, but those in Japan have a chance to take in a new body of work when her show opens at Lower Akihabara. Her surreal and sometimes disturbing works have long enchanted us at AM, so those who will be in Tokyo on June 15th would be advised to make plans to see her paintings for yourself. The show looks to be explore the use of Chrysanthemum, a commonly reoccurring flower in her imagery. […]

Openings: José Parlá & JR – “Wrinkles of the City, Havana” @ Bryce Wolkowitz

Last week, the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York hosted the opening of JR and José Parlá’s collaborative showing entitled The Wrinkles of the City, Havana. The joint works were based on the time they spent in Cuba a year ago painting street murals together (covered) as part of JR’s continuing project Wrinkles of the City where he photographs senior citizens and pastes their portraits on the walls of city buildings. Preview: Brendan Monroe – “Melting Into the Floor” @ Richard Heller Gallery

Oakland based artist, Brendan Monroe (interviewed), is opening an exhibition at Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica on May 18. After having solos in Switzerland, France, and Canada, this will be Monroe’s first show in the LA area in a long time (see 2009). This time around, he prepared number of acrylic paintings on paper, as well as some exceptionally well crafted sculptures in wood, mostly using very abstract, figurative images and elements. If you remember from earlier this year, Belgium-based artist ROA put on a homecoming show in Brussels at Bodson-Emelinckx Gallery entitled Stop Over. Although we covered the exhibition extensively, photos sometimes don’t do justice to the interactive nature of his works. This latest video that Colin M. Openings: Mike Shine – “Flotsam’s Harvest” @ White Walls

A couple months ago, White Walls in San Francisco played host to Flotsam’s Harvest by the Bolinas-based Mike Shine (featured). The exhibition consisted of an immersive installation featuring paintings, films, and performance art filled with symbolism and clues as to solve the dark “World Riddle” posed by Friedrich Nietzsche in his book, Thus Spake Zarathustra.
