POW WOW ’13: Streets Summary

After another enjoyable retreat in Hawaii for AM, it’s time to wrap up another successful POW WOW (see all our coverage here). Preview: Kenny Scharf – “Kolors” @ Paul Kasmin

The Standard (Highline) in New York will be putting a new sculptural work from Kenny Scharf on display in the hotel’s plaza. Entitled Squirtz, the large physical personification of the Los Angeles-based artist’s imagery will be on view for the public through April 1st at which point it will move to the Paul Kasmin Gallery. Over the weekend at the Art13 art fair in London, the Circle Culture Gallery featured some paintings from Katrin Fridriks at their booth in the Olympia Grand Hall. On Friday night (March 8th), Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be welcoming in WK Interact for his second solo with the showspace at a temporary location (557 West 23rd Street). 360 is meant to be a mid-career survey of WK’s work, celebrating the last 25 years of the French-born, New York-based artist’s career. Mark Drew – “Deez Nuts” @ China Heights Gallery

Aussie artist Mark Drew, co-founder of the China Heights Gallery, recently held a solo exhibition at the Sydney showspace entitled Deez Nuts. The premise behind this new body of work (which started as a zine of the same name) was his genius decision to meld Peanuts comic imagery with classic rap lyrics combining some of his childhood obsessions. Upcoming: “Game of Thrones” Group Exhibition @ Mondo Gallery

During this year’s SXSW week, Mondo will be unveiling original art and limited editions inspired by the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. The group exhibition will include artists like Audrey Kawasaki, Chet Zar, Esao Andrews, Joao Ruas, Mia Araujo, Tom Bagshaw, Mike Mitchell (above), and Daniel Danger (who already designed posters for the show for last year’s SDCC). Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. The Academy Awards were scheduled for Sunday, but on Saturday night, the stars came out to help celebrate Mario Testino’s opening reception for his exhibition at Prism in West Hollywood. Preview: Melissa Haslam – “Floating Garden” @ LeBasse Projects

This Saturday night (March 2nd), the paintings we got a glimpse of during a studio visit with Melissa Haslam last month will be put on display at LeBasse Projects. Floating Garden will feature the Australian artist’s botanically-infused portraiture and stems from her fascination with scientific and entomological illustrations. Garden spaces overgrown with foliage and focused work on suspended flowers and plants comprise of some of the imagery that will be seen in this body of work. Discuss this show here.
