Previews: Alexandros Vasmoulakis – “Figures” @ LeBasse Projects

In a couple hours, the LeBasse Projects in Culver City will open their doors for the opening of Alexandros Vasmoulakis’ solo show entitled Figures. On display will be the Greek artist’s form of loose portraiture, rendered in thick textural strokes and bright colors. Although the initial expressions seen are smiling, when looking at the paintings for a longer period of time, a viewer gets the sense that the subjects may be overdoing their looks of joy and may actually be laughing to hide their pain. Later tonight, the Thinkspace Gallery will be hosting the opening for their latest group show – In Our Wake. The diverse set of artists participating include Jason Thielke, Drew Young (above), Mary Iverson, Henrik Aa. Uldalen, Caitlin Hackett, Craig “Skibs” Barker, Liz Brizzi, and David Cooley. Preview: Scott Listfield & Jeff Gillette @ Gallery 1988 (Venice)

Later tonight, the Venice location for Gallery 1988 will be unveiling a two-person show from Scott Listfield and Jeff Gillette. The exhibition pairs Listfield’s astronaut pop culture-infused portraiture with Gillette’s postapocalyptic visions of the urban settings leading to an interesting look into the future perhaps from both artists. Preview: Sam Wolfe Connelly – “Nocturne” @ Roq La Rue

Tonight in Seattle, Sam Wolfe Connelly has a solo show opening at the Roq La Rue gallery featuring his dark and mysterious imagery. The NY-based painter will be putting a new body of work on display entitled Nocturne which will introduce art fans to his visual language which is at the same time delicately beautiful and sinister at the same time. Showing: Dan Witz – “Prisoners 2012 – 2013” @ Lazarides (Rathbone)

Late last month, the Lazarides’ Rathbone Place in London hosted Dan Witz’s solo debut with the gallery with a show entitled Prisoners 2012 – 2013. As the title suggests, the new body of work was mainly focused on a series where the NY-based artist partnered with Amnesty International, the world’s largest human rights organization, to create works featuring individuals who are subjects of their campaign for rights awareness. Coming up next month, LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) will be hosting a solo show from street artist and stenciling specialist Logan Hicks (interviewed). Last weekend, The Outsiders in London hosted the opening for Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) latest solo show. Entitled A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win, the new body of work featured mostly a series of studies that the UK-based painter labels his “morning glories” and which he uses to prepare for his large scale paintings (like the ones he did for a showing in 2012). Preview / Setup: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

If you remember, late last year, we shared with you some photos of JR touring Japan to spread his Inside Out love in his giant photo booth / converted truck. Turns out, that was only a precursor for a show opening officially this weekend at the Watarium Museum in Tokyo.
