Upcoming: Dan Witz – “Prisoners 2012 – 2013” @ Lazarides (Rathbone)

On January 25th, Dan Witz will be making his solo debut with Lazarides at their Rathbone gallery in London. The multi-talented painter and street artist will be sharing paintings from his Prisoner and Mosh Pit series as well as plans to paint one of his prisoner’s images onto London phone boxes. Fans of the NY-based artist will be familiar with his renderings of the frenetic and crowded environment in mosh pits (most recently seen at a New York showing in 2011), but the Prisoner series might be less familiar. Witz partnered […]

Openings: James Jean – “Parallel Lives” @ Tilton Gallery

Last night, James Jean (interviewed) premiered his latest body of work at New York’s Tilton Gallery. Entitled Parallel Lives, this amazing collection of works demonstrated the full spectrum of talent and techniques that makes James one of the hottest artists over the past decade. Hours before the opening, hundreds of people were lined to get in to see the show and to grab a copy of the limited edition monograph (here). As previewed in our studio visit and installation shots, this recent series is a variable cornucopia […]

Maurizio Cattelan – “AMEN” @ Centre for Contemporary Art (Warsaw)

The always provocative contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan is once again stirring up controversy, this time in relation to his current showing at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. In addition to sculptural works for the museum, he has also placed a statue of Adolf Hitler praying on his knees in a former Jewish Ghetto where many Jews were killed or sent to their deaths by Hitler’s regime during the holocaust. If you remember, this piece was seen in the the stunning suspended retrospective at the New York Guggenheim […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Upcoming: Robert Lazzarini – (damage) @ Marlborough Gallery (Chelsea)

This Thursday (January 10th), the Marlborough Gallery in Chelsea will be hosting the opening of Robert Lazzarini newest solo – (damage). The New York-based sculptor is known for his mind-bending works that take everyday objects and distorts them, leading the viewer to try to wrap their brain and eyes around the creation – oftentimes failing. For this exhibition, it sounds like Lazzarini will be twisting a window (above), safe, chain-linked fence, liquor sign, padlock, and motel door to disorient the audience, evoking an unsettling reaction.

Showing: Mark Schoening – ‘Recordings of a Lone Infantryman’ @ Marine Contemporary

Recordings of a Lone Infantryman is Los Angeles-based artist Mark Schoening’s latest solo exhibition currently showing at Marine Contemporary in Venice, CA. We’ve been looking forward to seeing this latest evolution of Mark’s work after seeing some glimpses of new sculptures – a first for Schoening – via his instagram account. His abstract compositions are full of dimensional depth with the build up of layer upon layer of paint and other medias between resin coats, but the geometric sculptures literally add a whole other dimension to his body of work – […]
