Last month, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York hosted an opening reception for surreal Sicilian artist Fulvio di Piazza (a previous subject of our Art Focus). Ashes to Ashes is the painter’s powerful debut show in the United States featuring his riveting landscapes of floating islands in a world covered in ash and fire. Coming up in October, the David B. Smith Gallery will be hosting a new solo exhibition from Kris Lewis (interviewed). If his previous shows (see 2011 & 2009) at the Denver showspace are any indication, the California-based artist will be bringing a selection of enchanting oil paintings with him. Curated by Coates and Scarry, the exhibition entitled Unnatural-Natural History recently launched at the Royal West of England Academy with many of the participating artists present at the opening. Featuring paintings, photography, drawings, sculptures and installations, 38 local and international artists are currently displaying their artistic interpretation of an alternative world. Sculptor and photographer Jason deCaires Taylor recently made his premiere at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a solo exhibition entitled Human Nature. The British born artist who grew up with the coral reefs of Malaysia is known for taking his talents of altering environments to the ocean. Utilizing specialized PH neutral materials, Jason creates cement based sculptures and lays them in nature’s aquatic settings to create artificial reefs. Way above the polar circle, a small Norwegian island community has kicked off a street art festival – Komafest. Stavanger-based street artist Pøbel has invited a quality lineup of artists up to Vardø, Norway to paint up the town including E. B. Miami artist collective FriendsWithYou will have their next exhibition open overseas in Hong Kong this coming Saturday (July 22nd). Happy Rainbow will be their first solo show in Chinese territory and will premier at the TMTP Cultural Center.
