With the opening booked for April 7th, the Tropico Post – Apocalyptic group exhibition artists will be filling the Extra Extra Gallery in Philadelphia with their work soon. Gideon Chase, Rachel de Joode, Joe Lacina, Alex Lukas, Matthew Palladino and Erin M. On Friday night, AM attended the opening for Ryan McGinness’ new show at New York’s Pace Primative. As the title Geometric Primitives indicates, Ryan utilizes his signature vocabulary of graphics and applies them to the African works that are at the core of the this specific gallery. Teaser: “Fifty Fifty” @ Mathgoth Galerie

Tomorrow night (April 4th), Mathgoth Galerie in Paris will be opening their Fifty Fifty group exhibition. For this showing, artists were asked to work with 50 x 50 cm canvases to create whatever they wanted. Nick Walker (interviewed) sent over a look at what he submitted, but if you are in town you may want to also check out what C215, Cope2, Cornbread, Crash, Labrona, L’Atlas, Smash137, Tilt, Zevs, and more have contributed. This Thursday night (April 5th), Nimit Malavia will be opening his solo exhibition Finding Together Again at Spoke Art in San Francisco. Drawing from a background in illustration, the Canada-based Malavia has created a body of work that features worlds of reinterpreted myths and religious symbols with imagery alive with raw emotion and wild movement. With an opening reception set for this Thursday, April 5th at the David B. Smith Gallery, we thought we would bring your attention to some new works from Christina Empedocles. A Unified Theory of Everything sees the SF-based artist continue to explore a wide range of subjects in the form of printed matter like old comics, movie posters, and nature periodicals. For those of you in the Washington DC area, you’re in for a special treat. Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) will be opening up a solo Thousand Regards this week at the Katzen Arts Center of the American University Museum. Co-sponsored by the Japan Embassy and the Japan Foundation, this impressive exhibition is part retrospective and part new imagery. Known for having a fresh style that blends Eastern & Western aesthetics, the Brooklyn-based artist of Japanese decent has been working feverishly at the nation’s capital to install the show. […]

Streets: Flying Fortress (Frankfurt)

At the end of last month, Montana Cans in Germany hosted a two day event, Just Writing My Name, where graf artists were invited to paint the Friedensbrücke bridge in Frankfurt. Munich-based legend Flying Fortress, who we met at this year’s POW WOW, participated with this long mural featuring “The Hit Collection.” Check out the full wall as well take a look at a video documenting the going-ons after the jump…

Openings: Meggs – “Journey is the Reward” @ Above Second

Last Friday in Hong Kong, Meggs made the 4500 mile journey from Australia again for another solo exhibition (see 2010) at the Above Second Gallery. With paintings, sculptures, and wall murals infused with his urban aesthetic and comic-inspired imagery filling the showpace, fans who attended the opening for Journey is the Reward were certainly not disappointed. Throw in some work on the streets of the city-state and it was definitely another productive trip. More photos after the jump…
