Openings: “Just Occupy” @ Robert Berman Gallery

Over the weekend, the Robert Berman Gallery presented an exhibit titled Just Occupy which gathered a collection of photography from photojournalists Ted Soqui and Christopher Felver, as well as works from Shepard Fairey (featured). The pieces shown centered on the L.A. Occupy movement that took shape during 2011 and it also marks the first major exhibition documenting this particular moment in time and those people who experienced it. The majority of the show included photographs from Soqui who shot the iconic image of the female […]

Videos: Futura 2000 – “Expansions” @ Galerie Jerome de Noirmont (Paris)

As part of our coverage of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris, you may have noticed some photos of a large abstract mural that the crowd was admiring. Apparently, Guillotine was on hand to document some live-painting action as the NY graffiti legend showed off his spray control. Discuss Futura here.

Art Stage Singapore ’12 – Overview

As a followup to the video footage of this year’s Art Stage Singapore that we posted over the weekend, here are some photos of some selected works from the fair. Featuring a more region-focused program, this Asian fair included some familiar names as well as many intriguing new artists to AM. More photos from the first art fair of the year via Artitute after the jump…

Preview: Eric Joyner – “It’s A Jungle Out There” @ Corey Helford

Transporting his beloved robots and donuts into a natural setting, Eric Joyner’s (interviewed) newest paintings will feature a nice contrasting backdrop for his favorite subjects. Robots using elephants as beasts of burden for their donuts, giant beasts and plant life fighting robots for their fried sugary treats, giant donuts seen far in the horizon of lush landscapes – there are just some of the imaginative imagery awaiting showgoers when Corey Helford opens its doors to It’s A Jungle Out There on this Saturday night, January 21st. […]

Teaser: Conor Harrington – “Dead Meat” @ Lazarides

We have to go all the way back to 2009 since we last attended a solo from Conor Harrington (interviewed). So, naturally we are excited to see what he has in store for his Dead Meat showing at Lazarides in March. We’ll have more details for you later, but for a hint, take a look at this quick piece he threw up that is an image from that upcoming exhibition as well as part of a film project he is involved with. Discuss Conor Harrington […]

Openings: Damien Hirst – “The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011” @ Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills

Being located the furthest west of any of the galleries in Larry Gagosian’s dominant empire, Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills was the very last spot (no pun intended) to host its public opening reception for Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011.  The immaculate outpost in the world famous 90210 area code is currently showing twenty-three spotted paintings of various size spots and canvases.  Unlike every other venue, it has the proud distinction of exhibiting the very largest spot piece, Pivalic Acid [pictured above],  which measures an […]

Openings: Ai Weiwei – “Sunflower Seeds” @ Mary Boone Gallery

Last week, the Mary Boone Gallery hosted the largest collection of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds that we have seen since his triumphant exhibition in London at the Tate Modern in 2010. Although much smaller in scale when compared to that museum showing which included 100 million pieces, seeing so many of these tiny porcelain seeds piled together really gives the viewer a sense of the amazing amount of work that went into the production. The original exhibition took 1,600 skilled artisan, supervised by the recent TIME Person […]

Preview: “The Boneyard Project: Return Trip” @ Pima Air and Space Museum

With only a couple more weeks to go before the opening for The Boneyard Project: Return Trip, artists are hard at work getting their plane parts painted – especially those who have whole planes to cover (DC Super 3 planes painted by How & Nosm, Nunca, and Retna, a C97 cockpit by Saner, a C45 plane by Faile, and a Lockheed VC 140 Jetstar by Andrew Schoultz). These retired military planes and nose cones will be on display at the show opening on January 28th […]

Showing: Damien Hirst – “The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Next stop on our tour of Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011 after leaving his Paris showing takes us to the Gagosian in Hong Kong. The most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists certainly has outdone himself with this current slate of exhibitions (at least in terms of scope and ambition). This lone display in Asia of his famous dotted motif is no different than the other eleven simultaneous shows planned – filled with paintings, spots, and canvases of different […]

Openings: “Vivian Maier: A Life Discovered” @ Merry Karnowsky

Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky gallery unveiled to the public their latest exhibition, one which featured the incredible photography of the late Vivian Maier.  Titled Vivian Maier – A Life Discovered: Photographs from the Maloof Collection, the exhibit featured a variety of photographs ranging from the 50’s to the 70’s and although this collection is barely the tip of the surface in terms of quantity of her work, the quality is simply incredible. The very special night was hosted by actor Tim Roth and […]
