Over the weekend, the Robert Berman Gallery presented an exhibit titled Just Occupy which gathered a collection of photography from photojournalists Ted Soqui and Christopher Felver, as well as works from Shepard Fairey (featured). The pieces shown centered on the L.A. Occupy movement that took shape during 2011 and it also marks the first major exhibition documenting this particular moment in time and those people who experienced it. As part of our coverage of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris, you may have noticed some photos of a large abstract mural that the crowd was admiring. Apparently, Guillotine was on hand to document some live-painting action as the NY graffiti legend showed off his spray control. Discuss Futura here.

Being located the furthest west of any of the galleries in Larry Gagosian’s dominant empire, Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills was the very last spot (no pun intended) to host its public opening reception for Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011. Last week, the Mary Boone Gallery hosted the largest collection of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds that we have seen since his triumphant exhibition in London at the Tate Modern in 2010. Although much smaller in scale when compared to that museum showing which included 100 million pieces, seeing so many of these tiny porcelain seeds piled together really gives the viewer a sense of the amazing amount of work that went into the production. Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky gallery unveiled to the public their latest exhibition, one which featured the incredible photography of the late Vivian Maier. Titled Vivian Maier – A Life Discovered: Photographs from the Maloof Collection, the exhibit featured a variety of photographs ranging from the 50’s to the 70’s and although this collection is barely the tip of the surface in terms of quantity of her work, the quality is simply incredible.
