Teaser: Arrested Motion – “City of Fire” Exhibition

After our first curatorial experience last year in Hong Kong with the East West Connect exhibition, our next project is a little closer to home. Entitled City of Fire, this new show in Los Angeles will again bring together a diverse list of artists that we have admired and covered through the years here on AM. We’ll be revealing more details soon as we draw closer to the opening in June.

Mausolee: Lek x Sowat (Paris)

Imagine an abandoned four storey supermarket in the North of Paris occupied by squatters, then deserted again. On August 12, 2010, French graffiti artists Lek and Sowat discovered the place much to their delight. For a year, in the greatest of secrets, both artists continuously wandered in this 430,000 sq ft monument to paint murals and organize an illegal artistic residency. After joining in on the three explosive creative sessions (here, here, and here) held by Cai Guo-Qiang, his crew, and a group of volunteers as they readied pieces for his upcoming exhibition, Sky Ladder, at the Los Angeles MOCA, we are really looking forward to the opening this Sunday. Showing: Do Ho Suh – “Home Within Home” @ Leeum Samsung Museum of Art

Currently showing at the Leeum Samsung Museum of Arts is native son Do Ho Suh’s Home Within Home. Bringing his signature sculptural works made from sheer fabric, the Korean artist explores the idea of his nomadic lifestyle lying in various major metropolitan areas of the world. With colorful and ethereal suspended structures greeting visitors when entering, the exhibition certainly makes an impression. AM recently attended the Olek’s latest show at New York City’s Krause Gallery. Yes, we said NYC. The rogue urban crocheter was out on bail from the UK and returned to her hometown to do a show with David Peterson entitled Synthetic Nature. For this special event, Olek ditched her signature yarn and utilized balloons. Using synthetic rubber, she built an cave installation by weaving semi-inflated balloons in a way that would make even Krusty the Clown blush. The Hole Gallery continues to push the edge as their latest collaborative project between E.V. Day and Kembra Pfahler opened up this past Friday to a packed house. The title GIVERNY references impressionist legend Claude Monet’s estate located in Giverny, where E.V. Day stayed during her Munn Artist Residency. Inspired by the lily padded ponds located on the estate, E.V. invited Pfahler to the actual garden to shoot the photos in this exhibition. Last weekend, the Corey Helford Gallery played host to the opening of the Natalia Fabia (interviewed) curated show Hookers. With the theme in mind, her artist friends including Kent Williams, Michael Hussar, Phil Hale, Erik Sandberg, Saber, REVOK, and more created pieces for the show that showed a diversity of mediums and range of artistic vision.
