Openings: Dylan Egon – “Home of the Brave” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Coca-Cola, Marlboro, Rolex, Adidas, Fender and Leica – what do those brands have in common? The answer is artist Dylan Egon. His experience as a tabletop design consultant & product stylist combined with a deep knowledge in the history of design & retail products allows him to create the profound and interesting art installations that we saw at this exhibition. These nostalgic assemblages were created by Egon for Home of the Brave at Jonathan Levine Gallery which focuses on his love of Americana. Check out […]

Auctions: Bonhams “Urban Art Sale” Results (September)

Last Wednesday, Bonhams hosted their September Urban Art Sale to a “packed house” at the New Bond Street location in Central London. As we highlighted the strength of some recent Banksy results in our overview and analysis of his Top 25 Most Expensive Works Ever, money appears to continue pouring into street art unimpeded at the auction level, despite the general malaise evident in the financial markets. This fact was further reinforced in the wake of last week’s Bonhams Sale, with the auction realizing a […]

Nate Lowman / Dash Snow / Dan Colen – “Three Amigos” @ Galleria Massimo De Carlo (Rome)

Affectionately referred to a “Warhol’s Children” in an in-depth New York Magazine article from 2007, the group of New York outcasts from the so-called “Bowery School” – including Dan Colen and Dash Snow (and Ryan McGinely, though not included in this event) – represented a new generation of provocative, scandalous, unique, and talented artists. Add Nate Lowman, another New York artist who represents the same ideals of the group of risk takers, into the equation with Colen and Dash and you have Three Amigos. Organized by […]

Presented by BLAB! The show entitled Strange Powers (part 2) is an exhibit of the self taught Canadian artist’s fun style that brings back nostalgic feelings of Sci-fi super 8 films, cell animation, pulp comics & magazines from a generation past. Check out a detailed look at this show after the jump.

Previews: PULSE Los Angeles ’11 – David B. Smith

After previewing three booths (here, here, and here) that we are looking forward to later today at the PULSE art fair, we have one final suggestion for those attending. Head over to check out the offerings from David B. Smith as he will be bringing works from Kris Lewis, Gregory Euclide, and Paul Jacobsen. The expressive new works from Lewis, unique three-dimensional paintings from Euclide, and hyper-realistic renderings from Jacobsen should round out your fair-going experience nicely. More preview images after the jump…

Tauba Auerbach Keynote Speaker @ The NY Art Book Fair (Queens)

The NY Art Book Fair is set to kick off tomorrow, September 30th running through October 3rd. Generously organized again by non-profit Printed Matter, the sixth iteration of the free and open to the public event will see more than 200 exhibitors, cementing itself as the world’s premier event for artists’ books, contemporary art catalogs and monographs, art periodicals, and artist zines. The gravity defying architecture of MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens is reason enough to attend. However, as an even greater incentive this […]

Openings: “Ultrasonic VI: Appropriate” – Mark Moore Gallery

LA’s Mark Moore Gallery recently opened their sixth annual Ultrasonic show, surveying emerging and mid-career artists. For this installment, the gallery tapped six artists – Theodora Allen, Sebastiaan Bremer, Alika Cooper, Mark Mulroney, Okay Mountain and Andrew Schoultz – whose work falls under the theme of appropriation. Texas artist collective Okay Mountain, who won the Pulse Prize at Pulse Miami in 2009 for their Corner Store installation, created a 12′ diameter white and grey wheel of fortune, similar to the one from the popular game […]

Openings: David LaChapelle – “Negative Currency” & “Recollections in America” @ PRISM

David LaChapelle is a chameleon when it comes to his work. Over the course of his storied career, the New York photographer has experimented with, and excelled in, nearly ever photographic style and technique imaginable. His wide arcing narrative couldn’t be more evident than with his most recent exhibition at PRISM, which opened last night at the swanky Los Angeles gallery. Pairing two bodies of work – Negative Currency and Recollections in America – as different in look and feel as they are similar in […]
