Auctions: Bonhams “Urban Art Sale” Results (September)

Last Wednesday, Bonhams hosted their September Urban Art Sale to a “packed house” at the New Bond Street location in Central London. As we highlighted the strength of some recent Banksy results in our overview and analysis of his Top 25 Most Expensive Works Ever, money appears to continue pouring into street art unimpeded at the auction level, despite the general malaise evident in the financial markets. Openings: Ryan Heshka – “Strange Powers 2” @ Copro Gallery

Ryan Heshka recently premiered a new body of works at Los Angeles’ Copro Gallery. Presented by BLAB! The show entitled Strange Powers (part 2) is an exhibit of the self taught Canadian artist’s fun style that brings back nostalgic feelings of Sci-fi super 8 films, cell animation, pulp comics & magazines from a generation past. Tonight in New Mexico, Frank Gonzales will be opening his solo show at Beals & Abbate Fine Art. The New York-based painter, who recently made the cover of American Art Collector, will be introducing a new body of work featuring his love for nature infused with a little fragmentation and abstraction. After previewing three booths (here, here, and here) that we are looking forward to later today at the PULSE art fair, we have one final suggestion for those attending. Head over to check out the offerings from David B. Smith as he will be bringing works from Kris Lewis, Gregory Euclide, and Paul Jacobsen. The expressive new works from Lewis, unique three-dimensional paintings from Euclide, and hyper-realistic renderings from Jacobsen should round out your fair-going experience nicely. Generously organized again by non-profit Printed Matter, the sixth iteration of the free and open to the public event will see more than 200 exhibitors, cementing itself as the world’s premier event for artists’ books, contemporary art catalogs and monographs, art periodicals, and artist zines. LA’s Mark Moore Gallery recently opened their sixth annual Ultrasonic show, surveying emerging and mid-career artists. For this installment, the gallery tapped six artists – Theodora Allen, Sebastiaan Bremer, Alika Cooper, Mark Mulroney, Okay Mountain and Andrew Schoultz – whose work falls under the theme of appropriation. Texas artist collective Okay Mountain, who won the Pulse Prize at Pulse Miami in 2009 for their Corner Store installation, created a 12′ diameter white and grey wheel of fortune, similar to the one from the popular game […]
