Preview: Tran Nguyen – “The Synapse Between Here and There” @ Thinkspace

Tomorrow night, July 16th, Tran Nguyen will open her solo show The Synapse Between Here and There at Thinkspace. Preview: Melissa Haslam – “Kigurumi” @ Lebasse Projects

Tonight at LeBasse Projects in the Los Angeles Chinatown, Melissa Haslam (featured) will be presenting a new body of work that promises an increased attention to detail and realism as she continues to refine her technique. Drawing her inspiration from the Japanese subculture of fashioning oneself to look like stuffed animals or Kigurumi, the Australia-based painter uses this metaphor to explore ideas social role-playing. A couple of weeks back AM went along to take a look at Meggs‘ first London solo exhibition entitled Inner Demons. Every Thing Must Go (previewed), the new Charming Baker pop-up show in London’s Covent Garden opened on Thursday 7 July. It was a well-organised, confidently-run operation on the night. Guests were looked after by a tag-team of hosts including the artist himself, his manager Tim Fennell, Pat Magnarella and Roger Klein of Pat Magnarella Management, and the Jealous Gallery crew. Preview: Andrew Hem – “Cold Water” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

On July 16th, Andrew Hem (interviewed) will be presenting a whole new body of work a the Culver City location of LeBasse Projects near his recent street mural (covered). Entitled Cold Water, this collection of paintings from Andrew are some of the most balanced, detailed, and impressive to date. Openings: COPE2 – “AUTHENTIC” @ Maximillian Gallery

Several months after hitting up his home city with a show (covered), NY graf legend COPE2 travels to the other coast for a show in Los Angeles. AUTHENTIC, which opened last week at Maximillian Gallery, is billed as his first solo in the City of Angels and is a retrospective featuring throwups, pieces, his signature MTA subway maps, and miniature subway trains. Openings: Dan Witz – “Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Brett Amory’s solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was also Dan Witz’s Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise. This show featured the Brooklyn-based artist and his hyper-realistic painting style where he applies old master techniques to create incredibly vibrant and detailed works. We saw his signature large-scale oil paintings which feature Witz’s crazy and energy packed mosh pits as well as some works from his illuminated series. Openings: Hikari Shimoda – “Me, as in the Beast Coat” @ Foley Gallery

AM caught the opening featuring Hikari Shimoda when the Japanese artist exhibited at New York’s Foley Gallery. The show Me, as in the Beast Coat was a intriguing series or paintings that explored the complex themes of adolescence and how young adults strive to cope with the reality of growing into their situation. Openings: ROA – “Transit” @ Skalitzers (Berlin)

Last Saturday night in Berlin, ROA returns to Germany (see Cologne 2010) and transformed Skalitzers into a personal playground for his anatomically exposed creatures. Employing wall murals, including one that cleverly incorporates a doorway, as well as movable paintings on found objects, showgoers were invited to play and interact with the Belgium-based artist’s new work collectively entitled Transit. Teaser: Ron English Custom Dunny Painting @ Kidrobot (New York)

This Thursday, July 14th (6-8pm), Ron English (featured) will be at the Kidrobot in New York to do some live painting. However, the “canvas” will be a four foot dunny of which the pop artist should have no difficulty with dispite its uneven surface. Ron was just in London for his Lazarides show (covered), so this will be a chance for NYC fans to get reacquainted. Discuss Ron English here.
