Openings: “Outside/In” @ LeBasse Projects

Last night, AM headed out to Culver City for the lone show on our schedule at LeBasse Projects. It was certainly worth the trip as we were greeted by work from a nice selection of artists in the Outside/In group show including Case, Herakut, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, SharkToof and Bumblebee. As a bonus, most of the participants were on hand before they head out to New Hampshire for the second part of the show at the Portsmouth Museum of Art. More opening pics after the jump…

Video: Swoon Installation @ MOCA

We only recently brought you a in-depth look at the amazing installation Swoon (interviewed) created for the Art in the Streets exhibition.  Well, a new video (directed by Cat Solen) from the Levi’s Film Workshop has been released showing the behind-the-scenes preparations of that complex illuminated piece and not surprisingly, the delicate work required looked quite arduous and time-consuming.  Well worth the effort don’t you think? Via Show & Tell Gallery. Discuss this show here. Discuss Swoon here.

Teaser: Katrin Fridriks – “Leak of Information” @ Circleculture Gallery (Berlin)

Last we saw Katrin Fridriks’ work, she stole a London group show (covered) with her signature abstract color explosions. It now appears she has muted the palette, akin to one of the works exhibited prior, presenting a selection of monochromatic works composed in her uniquely organic fashion. Opening Thursday, April 28th at Circleculture Gallery in Berlin, the Icelandic born Paris-based artist will be targeting the ubiquitous technological underpinnings of modern society with her departure to more metallic color tones – silver, gold, steel, cooper, aluminum. Openings: Marilyn Minter – “Paintings from the 80s” @ Team Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Marilyn Minter’s latest show Paintings from the 80’s at New York’s Team Gallery. As the title suggests, this body of work is actually a retro showcase of paintings from earlier in her illustrious career. Unlike the stunning series of photographs or photorealistic paintings that most have experienced recently, Minter uses her painterly skills to explore her versions of raw pornographic snapshots paired in contrast with some imagery feature coming of age innocence. More NSFW pics after the jump.

Openings: Souther Salazar – “You Come Too” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last Saturday in New York, Souther Salazar presented a delightful new body of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The show, entitled You Come Too, featured paintings of fantastical worlds, inventive mixed media assemblages, and rich installations centered around ideas of inclusion, sharing adventure, and togetherness which in no small part were inspired by his recent life experiences. More photos after the jump…

Preview: Naoto Hattori – “The Magic Caravan” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

The last time we covered one of Naoto Hattori’s exhibitions, he was wowing the Los Angeles crowd with his psychedelic works. Next Thursday, on April 28th, he opens another show a world away in Italy at the Dorothy Circus Gallery entitled The Magic Caravan alongside Mark Elliot. You can expect more of Naoto’s signature paintings exploring beauty in the grotesque and unexpected, all rendered in painstaking detail. Take a look at more preview images as well as a video after the jump…

Preview: Jessica Harrison – “Broken” @ Jealous Gallery

Jessica Harrison, whose bloody ceramic sculptures first caught our eyes at a group show last summer, will be opening a solo show later this month in London. Entitled Broken, a nod to the similarly named collection of figurines (Breaking), Harrison’s gory handiwork will be on display at the Jealous Gallery starting on April 28th. Fans of self-mutilation will have to make sure they stop by to check out the decapitated and disemboweled takes on these classic pieces if they are in town. More preview images […]

Previews: ‘Modern Fabulists’ @ View Gallery, Bristol

Coming to Bristol this week is Modern Fabulists – a group exhibition curated by our friends Chippy Coates and Richard Scarry, aka Coates & Scarry. You’ll know Richard as being the director of Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, who of course curated the 2010 Art from the New World exhibition at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. View Gallery hosts Modern Fabulists, which as the title suggests, thematically deals with folkloric storytelling though the eyes and minds of contemporary artists. Expect some narrative heavy work […]

Openings: “Facemaker” @ Royal/T

Facemaker opened at Royal/T last Wednesday, curated by Kathy Grayson, director of The Hole NYC and former director of the Deitch Projects. Just in time for Art in the Streets, the eclectic Culver City art space has teamed up with the New York gallery to put on a street-pop frenzy, displaying a playful amalgam of colorful imagery centered on different interpretations of the face. With street artists Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, KAWS, and SWOON on the roster, alongside Clare Rojas, FriendsWithYou, Ben Jones, […]
