Showing: Scott Listfield – “Astronaut” @ Rotofugi

Currently at Rotofugi in Chicago, artist Scott Listfield has about 20 oil on canvas paintings on display collectively entitled Astronaut. As suggested by the title of the show, the works all center around a familiar protagonist seen in most of his works – the character in the spacesuit. Seen encountering everything from pop culture references, to surreal and out of place scenarios, to futuristic settings, to the abstract, his subject and the reaction from seeing these things can only be imagined by the viewer as he or […]

Streets: Jeff Soto (Los Angeles)

While prepping for his solo (more on this later) opening at KP Projects / MKG later this month, Jeff Soto (interviewed) recently found time to paint a mural just down the street from the Los Angeles showspace. Featuring one of his signature owls, the piece located on La Brea and West 1st Street will greet attendees when the show opens on June 26th. Take a look at more detailed and in-progress shots below… Photo credit: Jordan Ahern. Discuss Jeff Soto here.

Previews: “Vitality and Verve” @ Long Beach Museum of Art (Part I)

Yesterday, AM had the opportunity to stop by the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) for what’s shaping up to be an epic exhibition. Put on in collaboration by Thinkspace Gallery, the people behind POW! WOW!, and LBMA, the main attraction of Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape are the on site installations and murals. While there, we enjoyed seeing the finishing touches and beginnings of works from Audrey Kawasaki (seen above), Aaron Horkey, Brendan Monroe, Cryptik, Esao Andrews, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Hot Tea, James Bullough, and Nosego. […]

Streets: El Mac – “Nuestra Gente” (Phoenix)

Some of El Mac’s most breathtaking murals are collaboration with graffiti artists where his ethereal portraiture is overlaid against a background of urban letterforms. Nuestra Gente, created earlier this year in Phoenix, Arizona, certainly fits the bill when he collaborated with local legends Mando Rascón & Pablo Luna. The background designs seen around the face were painted by Rascón and the outer images on the ends of the mural were laid down by Luna. Created in downtown on Van Buren Street, the sublime wall near where the Los Angeles-based artist […]

Tomorrow night (June 13th) in San Francisco, artists and designers Kai & Sunny will be putting on a show at the 886 Geary Gallery entitled The Matter Of Time. This Saturday sees a new gallery in the city of Oakland open its doors with a group exhibition entitled House Warming. When Athen B. Openings: James Reka – “Olympvs” @ Avantgarden Gallery

On June 4th, Avantgarden Gallery in Milan opened OLYMPVS, a solo show by James Reka, that will stay on view until THE 10th of July. For this event, the Berlin-based artist created a coherent body of work that mirrors the aesthetics of ancient Greek culture. Showing the typical imagery of that period, through his almost abstract visual language, Reka created an interesting mixture of old and new. Using his strict geo shapes along with spraypaint transparency and solid fill ins, the artist depicts recognizable architectural elements such as arches and […]
