Streets: Stephen “ESPO” Powers (Miami)

Stephen Powers recently shared photos of a massive mural he painted at The Carlton Hotel in Miami, directly behind The Betsy Hotel. Provided with a blank wall and all the spray paint he could want, the Brooklyn-based artist also know as ESPO covered the facade with his distinctive wordplay and witty “Espoetry.” Take a further look at the details in the images below… Discuss ESPO here.

The New York-based Todd James a.k.a. REAS, is showing his new works at London’s Lazarides. The exhibition entitled Fantasy Island explores the grotesque of socio-political news we receive, between images of war, somali pirates, UN soldiers and scantily-clad females posing on the cover of fashion magazines. Using vibrant colours, the American artist’s paintings feature an army of multicolored AK47, armed soldiers balancing cup of teas in armchairs, while his oversexualised blonde female portraits are reminiscent of Wesselman. Tomorrow (May 2nd) at the Seattle Art Museum, Rebirth Of The World, a solo show from Chiho Aoshima, will open to a public. The Takashi Murakami protégé from his Kaikai Kiki Collective is known for her fantasy worlds of ghosts, zombies, and teenage girls, oftentimes created with a digital technique. For this exhibition, the Japanese artist has prepared colorful large-scale dreamscapes printed on plexiglass, 35 drawings on paper, and an animation that will be shown in public for the first time. After stopping by to check in on the progress of the joint mural between Jeff Soto (interviewed) and Maxx242 in Riverside, we dropped by a couple days ago to see the finished two-wall piece. The long time friends, collaborators (see Berlin & Luxembourg), and artists who have spent most of their lives in the area hope that this new mural will be the beginning of a new renaissance for public art in this part of Southern California. DALeast (interviewed) is currently globetrotting again, participating in festivals and different projects worldwide. He spent last few weeks on the west coast of Australia, taking part at the Public 2015 festival (more coverage here) in Perth. Getting assigned an unusual, non flat surface, the Chinese artist once again showcased the strength and uniqueness of his style and technique. David Shillinglaw (see the studio visit here) recently opened a new solo exhibition entitled You Are Here at Scream Gallery in London. A large crowd gathered to see the re-creation of the studio space of the artist, like an exploration of his creative mind, and enjoyed the new body of work on canvas, paper and wood, featuring symbols and typography with British artist’s signature sunny colour palette. On the cover of this month’s New York Times Magazine is a special project prepared by JR (interviewed) for their Walking New York issue. Focused on the issue of immigration as of late, the famous street artist decided to photograph recent immigrants walking down the streets of Nolita and in turn pasting their images on city streets, where they are often invisible despite there being approximately 3.1 million of them in NYC. This June, Blum & Poe will open a pop up gallery on Ibiza, showing exclusive new works by Takashi Murakami. The Japanese artist recently shared these in-progress photos showing his studio staff at Miyoshi Factory preparing the works. Along with new large paintings, a few sculptures will be exhibited, including one that will be placed at the entrance of a newly constructed casino on the island.
