Art Focus: Odeith

We recently came across the work of Odeith and his mind-bending form of anamorphic graffiti that seems to leap out at you from certain vantage points. The Lisbon-based artist operated a tattoo parlor for a while but has since returned to art full time including commissioned work with brands such as London Shell, Kingsmill, the Coca-Cola Company, Estradas de Portugal, Samsung, Sport Lisboa e Benfica (football club) and several Portuguese city halls such as Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and Câmara Municipal de Oeiras, amongst others. Take […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Tom Fruin @ AQUA (Paul Loya Gallery)

While walking through the Aqua Art Fair (covered) during Basel Week Miami, we were delighted to come across the work of Tom Fruin at the Paul Loya Gallery booth. Although we were familiar with his amazing stain glass installation pieces (see 2014, 2012), we were not aware of the versatility of the Brooklyn-based artist. On display were metal works fashioned into cop cars and grids as well as a quilt made from found drug bags. Take a look at more photos below… See all our coverage of Basel […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Swoon

Along with a large installation piece as part of The Dean Collection at SCOPE Miami and an underwater art extravaganza at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel pool, Swoon (interviewed) also presented a new mural for her fans that made it out to Basel Week Miami. Housed in the prestigious Wynwood Walls complex, the large wall will be preserved for future travelers. Take a look at more photos below… See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Showing: Soey Milk – “SINAVRO” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Currently on view at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City is a solo show from Soey Milk entitled SINAVRO, which is a pure Korean word translated loosely to mean “to progress slowly, almost imperceptibly.” Those who have followed evolution of the young Los Angeles-based artist’s work certainly have seen a move toward richer backgrounds and more intricate detailing in her feminine portraiture. Head over before January 10th if you want to check out her new paintings and drawings as well as a few purely abstract pieces that seem […]

Recap: Kevin Peterson – “Remnants” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Yesterday, we stopped by on the last day of the soldout Kevin Peterson show at Thinkspace Gallery to check out his new paintings. Collectively entitled Remnants, the fresh collection of works feature the Houston-based artist’s children and animal portraiture in urban settings. Utilizing these unlikely subjects with such stark backgrounds often featuring graffiti, abandoned structures, and overgrowth provides a contrast that is recognizable in all of his work. Some of the pieces had three-dimensional elements included (like metal grills) that fit in seamlessly into the […]

Showing: visualSKIN – “Ghost Ship” @ Amsterdam Light Festival

For the newest edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival showing through January 18th, the four person Romania-based architecture collective visualSKIN have created a stunning installation entitled Ghost Ship. Projecting the image of a 17th century onto two perpendicular curtains of weather, the piece references the rich maritime history of Netherlands’ capital city. Those in town can see this colorful replica of the famous Dutch East India Company ship that started its maiden voyage to Batavia in 1749 in person in front of the ARCAM Amsterdam Center for Architecture and The National Maritime […]

Jen Stark For Miami International Airport

Versatile artist Jen Stark certainly kept busy with her art visible at various venues during Basel Week Miami, including showing at the Untitled. art fair (covered). Before leaving town, she also completed a large scale public mural at the Miami International Airport located at Terminal D & E (3rd level), just off the moving skywalk. It’s a permanent installation so next time you are in town, make sure you stop by. Photo credit: Peter Vahan. Discuss Jen Stark here.

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Recap: Library Street Collective Group Show

While in town for Basel Week Miami, one of the exhibitions we enjoyed the most was put on by the Library Street Collective near Wynwood Walls. With a diverse list of artists involved including Revok, Shepard Fairey, Pose, Kelsey Brookes, Tristan Eaton, Smash137, Vhils, Hush, Sam Friedman, Maya Hayuk, Roids, Mad C, AJ Fosik, Cleon Peterson, Dave Kinsey, Hacer (seen above), Hense, Faith47, How & Nosm, and Swoon, fans had a chance to see a wide range of works. It looks like many of the artists contributed some prime pieces that […]

Showing: Ai Weiwei – “F Grass” Installation @ Vancouver Biennale

China’s most notorious artist and social activist, Ai Weiwei, recently introduced a new public piece created exclusively for the Vancouver Biennale. F Grass is a site specific piece currently exhibited in Harbour Green Park, Vancouver, that is composed of 1328 tufts of iron grass. Totaling 182 square meters, this installation shows letter F, constructed of oversized grass tufts. F Grass is the continuation of the Chinese artist’s large-scale installation Sunflower Seeds made for Tate Modern in 2010 (covered), as they both share a similar idea – “the relationship between the individual and the collective and the […]

Recap: Taku Obata – “Bust a Move” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Jonathan LeVine Gallery recently closed a show featuring the dynamic b-boy and b-girl wood sculptures created by Taku Obata. Entitled Bust a Move, the debut US solo exhibition from the Japanese artist draws from his own experiences as a breakdancer with his subjects frozen in poses and stances that everyone from that subculture recognizes. Also rounding out the body of work were a series of drawings and lithographs. Photo credit: Joe Russo & the gallery.
