Signings: David Choe – Snowman Monkey BBQ @ The Hundreds (NYC)

Back in Fall, David Choe (featured) announced the release of his latest book Snowman Monkey BBQ. This 266 page hard cover compiles numerous artwork including his gorgeous signature watercolors. Mr. Choe recently held a signing with the good folks at The Hundreds to reward his New York fans. Hundreds of people braved the cold weather to geek out with the Los Angeles-based artist for a little face time and they were definitely rewarded as he arrived in costume and took time to speak to each attendee and draw in their […]

Openings: Ron English – “Evolutionary Alternatives” @ Tribeca Grand Hotel

Prior to traveling down to Basel Week Miami, Ron English (featured) unveiled a unique installation at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Entitled Evolutionary Alternatives, this showcase curated by Natalie Kates Projects focused on Ron’s camouflage animal motif and brought it to life in the main concourse of the hotel with life sized sculptures of the deers painted to blend in with the foliage in the lobby. It was a great take on nature’s evolutionary defense mechanism cross pollinated with visual design. A special Dinogrenade edition was also released at the event […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: de la Cruz Collection – “Beneath the Surface”

One of the best privately-owned collections in Miami is the de la Cruz Collection, which exhibits pieces from the collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz. During this year’s Basel Week Miami, it featured the Beneath the Surface show, which mainly included works by major American artists that have received attention during the past ten years. Among them were Joe Bradley, Dana Schutz, Tauba Auerbach, Kelley Walker, Wade Guyton, Seth Price, Nate Lowman, Dan Colen, Alex Israel, Rob Pruitt, and more. Each respective artist was […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Streets: Faith47 x Alexis Diaz

Another wall that caught our eyes while around Wynwood Walls during Basel Week Miami was a joint effort from Faith47 and Alexis Diaz, a continuation of the The Art of Collaboration program this year (also see Shep x Cleon Peterson). The mural was stunning in person, mixing South Africa-based Faith47’s female portraiture entwined with the darker illustrative style of the Puerto Rican Diaz. Here are some shots of him putting the finishing touches on the piece as well as a look at the entire image. Full image of the wall via […]

Interviews: Lala Abaddon

Lala Abaddon is a New York-based artist that is getting more and more attention with her unique woven prints. After showing her works in several group shows, having them included in charity art auctions and achieving great results, she is now fully focused on her upcoming solo show at Castor Gallery in NYC in March 2015. So, while most of art world was focused to Miami, we visited her studio, saw some of the large works she is working on, witnessed how much patience and passion […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss […]

Openings: Kai & Sunny – “Lots of Bits of Star” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

British artistic duo Kai and Sunny, who we have been long time followers, recently opened a new solo exhibition in New York at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Lots of Bits of Stars includes carvings, letterpress prints and ink works on paper. The duo also created an original collaboration with Shepard Fairey. Depicting geometric patterns of flora and fauna, the works in the show revolve around contradicting perceptions of the natural world, balancing the serene with the fierce, the fragile with the stable, and the vulnerable with the assertive. The creative […]
