Showing: Titi Freak – “In A Dream” @ Black Book Gallery

Earlier this month, the Black Book Gallery in Denver opened In A Dream, a new solo from Titi Freak. Sending over works from Brazil, the artist known for his street art made his heritage and his two years apprenticing in Japan count by letting their influence shine through. The new body of work is centered around a large 10 panel wood piece featuring a koi fish, and supported by loose portraits as well as a wall of leaves. Openings: Eric Joyner – “First World Problems” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Over the weekend, painter and donut aficionado Eric Joyner (interviewed) opened his solo show at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. First World Problems introduces new paintings featuring his signature retro robots and their fried dessert companions in Joyner’s continuing survey of this strange world. Returning his mechanical friends to the urban setting made for interesting opportunities to depict his unique version of city life. Openings: Luke Chueh – “Random Acts Of Sadness” @ CHG Circa

On Saturday night, Luke Chueh’s (featured) opened his latest solo show, Random Acts Of Sadness, at CHG Circa. The mostly new works featured paintings that placed his familiar animal subjects in humorous yet sad situations as well as pieces that poked fun at his critics with self-deprecatory references. Also on display was a new sculptural piece Jack (seen below), inspired by his classic Jacked painting from 2005. Releases: Tauba Auerbach – “STAB/GHOST”

For those of you who haven’t seen the beautiful handcrafted STAB/GHOST book by artist Tauba Auerbach, here is a closer look. Released through Three Star Books, the translucent limited edition comprises of “clear plastic pages, silkscreened with patterns, sewn with lanyards of plastic thread, and mounted on a specially designed light table.” Produced in an edition of 10, the piece which also functions as a light sculpture, is a testament to Auerbach’s well-known interest in color theory and complex geometries.
