Armory Week ’13: Armory Show – First Look (Part II)

Continuing on our visual overview of this gigantic fair… Similar to previous years, this year’s Armory show took place over both Pier 92 and 94. Roughly, the former showcased a refined selection of art from the Modern period, while the latter hosted the much larger group of galleries displaying contemporary works. Regardless at which pier you started off, the cornucopia of blue chip works were enough to ensnare the most seasoned art fair attendee for hours on end. Check out part two of our first day […]

Armory Week ’13: Scope Art Fair – First Look

One of the annual satellite fairs we look forward to during Armory Week is Scope New York. This international fair always brings together a diverse mix of visual, performance, sculptural and photographic art from a range of emerging artists, which we find to be a nice change of pace from the more mainstream contemporary art showcased at the Armory Art Fair. This year, we saw works from street, urban and low brow-pop surrealist artists, including such AM favorites as Ron English, GILF, Brian Viveros and […]

Armory Week ’13: Armory Show – First Look

It’s that time again in the Big Apple! Spring is here and so is the Armory Art Show. This flagship fair held on the West Side of Manhattan leads a week of nonstop visual action, as collectors from around the globe fly into NYC to storm the fair in hopes of acquiring works from their favorite artists. Blue chip galleries such as Gagosian, Victoria Miro and David Zwirner brought some of their brightest artists in an effort to woo collectors to their booths. AM joined […]

Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. Setup: WK Interact – “WK 360” @ Jonathan LeVine (Pop-up)

Tonight, WK Interact will be exhibiting a large body of work at Jonathan Levine gallery’s pop-up gallery location that housed How & Nosm’s recent showcase. This show, entitled WK 360, is an expansive mid-career survey of the first 25 years that WK has created in the world of art, both indoors & out. AM joined the French-born & New York-based artist earlier this week as he and the gallery worked feverishly to put together this impressive showcase of the wild and ingenious “interactive” art work that […]

Openings: Logan Hicks – “Thin Veils And Heavy Anchors” @ L.A.C.E

Earlier tonight, AM dropped by L.A.C.E. Gallery in Hollywood to take in a solo exhibition entitled Thin Veils And Heavy Anchors from stencil specialist Logan Hicks. The new body of work filled the expansive showspace with two series of works – beautifully layered cityscapes & urban settings and novel new portraiture set against the backdrop of deconstructed architectural structures. Every piece was executed perfectly with stencil, spray, and etching thematically exploring the dual ideas of finally seeing things for what they are and keeping grounded. […]

POW WOW ’13: Streets Summary

After another enjoyable retreat in Hawaii for AM, it’s time to wrap up another successful POW WOW (see all our coverage here). Here are some of the other completed murals we saw while we were in town for the event that we haven’t focused on yet, including photos of walls that were in progress the last time we shared pics with you. Artists include ROID and Madsteez (seen above), as well as Apex, Askew, Bam, Ekundayo, Estria, Hannah Stouffer, Ian Kuali’i, Katch, Kamea Hadar, Meggs, […]

Upcoming: Erik Parker – “Upswing Dub Project” @ Pace Prints

This week, painter Erik Parker will unveil a new series of monoprints at New York’s Pace Prints. Entitled Upswing Dub Project, this show will be Erik’s inaugural exhibition at the iconic space. Utilizing his unique painting style and compositions, Mr. Parker collages rarities and other “miscreations” from his storied repertoire in this creative body of works. The show opens March 7th with an opening reception with the artist from 6-8pm.

Streets: Liqen (Ecuador)

Mexican artist Liqen recently headed south to spend some time on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast.  Besides enjoying some good food, the street muralist did some birdwatching and sketching different species of these winged creatures. Inspired by the experience, he recently painted this wood building in Esmeraldas although some of the things he painted may be from his impressive imagination. More detailed photos below… Discuss Liqen here.

Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Take a look at more detailed photos below… Via Designboom. Discuss Patricia Piccinini here.
