Openings: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

We recently gave you a sneak peek at French “photograffeur” JR as he worked feverishly to set up his first solo museum exhibition at Tokyo’s Watari Musuem of Contemporary Art. This past weekend, the show opened to a enthusiastic reception by the people in Japan. Highlighting his Inside Out project, which incorporated the residents from North East Japan (where the tsunami hit in March 2011), JR went big as he always does and wheat-pasted the exterior facade of the museum. On the inside, we saw a diverse […]

POW WOW ’13 (Part I)

With POW WOW 2013 in full swing, AM made the rounds yesterday to check out the progress as murals were going up all around the Kakaʻako district in Honolulu. Some of the artists featured at work in this first set of photos include Jeff Soto, Nychos, 123Klan, Angry Woebots, Dabs Myla, Madsteez, Shark Toof, Katch, Slick, and Rone & Wonderlust – who are collaborating on the mural seen above. The day of art was finished up with a series of talks at the University of Hawaii. […]

Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat @ Gagosian (New York)

Jean Michel-Basquiat was born in December of 1960 to a modest household in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 5, he was (like most kids) heavily inspired by cartoons and began to sketch out his own. In his adolescent years, although very gifted intellectually (fluent in 4 languages by the age of 11), he became socially awkward, withdrawn and subsequently rebellious. When he was 15, Basquiat dropped out of high school and began running the streets, often seeking the shelter of a New York […]

Openings: Rostarr – “Turbo Arena” @ Anonymous Gallery

Last week, New York artist Rostarr (featured) unveiled his latest body of work in Mexico City at Anonymous Gallery. This inspiring series of paintings entitled Turbo Arena draws from his hypnotic signature style that is a smooth mash-up of iconography, graphics & calligraphy. Ro took our breath away with a jaw dropping 80 foot installation that he hand painted all by his lonesome. This show is up through the end of March, so if you’re fortunate enough to be in Mexico City, do yourself a favor […]

Tracey Emin Lights Up Times Square

Every night this month, at 11:57 pm, Time Square in New York will be lit up with work from Tracey Emin. The English artist’s iconic “neon” messages will spell themselves out over three minutes, digitally animated (which can be purchased as s[edition]) on 40 screens of different sizes placed all around the famous intersection in Midtown Manhattan. The lent time is made possible through the Times Square Advertising Coalition, which which last May began giving several minutes a day to the Times Square Alliance for late-night public-art projects. For art lovers in […]

Showing: Dan Witz – “Prisoners 2012 – 2013” @ Lazarides (Rathbone)

Late last month, the Lazarides’ Rathbone Place in London hosted Dan Witz’s solo debut with the gallery with a show entitled Prisoners 2012 – 2013. As the title suggests, the new body of work was mainly focused on a series where the NY-based artist partnered with Amnesty International, the world’s largest human rights organization, to create works featuring individuals who are subjects of their campaign for rights awareness. These combined with the lighting in the space made for a dramatic setting. These paintings were joined by some […]

Showing: Conor Harrington – “A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win” @ The Outsiders (London)

Last weekend, The Outsiders in London hosted the opening for Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) latest solo show. Entitled A Whole Lot of Trouble for a Little Bit of Win, the new body of work featured mostly a series of studies that the UK-based painter labels his “morning glories” and which he uses to prepare for his large scale paintings (like the ones he did for a showing in 2012). Included in the mix were several larger pieces and as a whole, this exhibition showed off Harrington’s deft balance between the abstract and realism […]
