Streets: Shepard Fairey x Vhils (Lisbon)

Just this weekend, Printed Matters, a show from Shepard Fairey (featured) opened at Underdogs in Lisbon, a gallery co-founded by the locally-based Vhils (interviewed). Their collaboration didn’t end there as the American and Portuguese street artists combined their artistic vision for a joint mural featuring Shep’s iconic imagery and Vhils unique mark-making. Kickstarter: Luke Chueh – “Grief Encounters” Animated Series

Luke Chueh (interviewed) has recently started a Kickstarter with Munky King to create one minute shorts of some of his most iconic paintings. With the expertise of Tiny Giants, the Los Angeles-based artist’s world will expand as stories can be told centered around how his characters ended up in the situations they did (see an example below of his Target painting). Festival Iminente will be bringing a taste of Portuguese culture to East London at the end of the month. The event is being curated by Vhils and the Underdogs Gallery which he established in 2013. The festival debuted in Lisbon’s Oeiras district last autumn and this latest iteration carries a particularly contemporary theme with the subtitle Art Before Brexit. Previews: Edwin Ushiro – “A Survey” @ Giant Robot 2

On July 8th, Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles will be opening a new solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) entitled A Survey. Like his showing with the gallery back in 2015 (covered), the locally-based artist delves deep into his youth with nostalgic scenes from his experiences growing up in Hawaii. Created through his unique process and novel technique, the paintings seem to glow with a luminous light  like a memory extracted from Ushiro’s Pensieve. Showing: Slinkachu @ The Museum of Fine Arts (Ghent, Belgium)

Currently at the The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, Slinkachu has some works on view as part of a new group show Manufactories of Caring Space-Time. Not only does the UK-based artist have his signature miniatures on view that are part of the museum’s permanent collection inside but also has some installations outdoors as is his practice. Showing: Faile – “The Size of the Fight” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

Last weekend, Library Street Collective opened a new solo from Faile (featured) entitled The Size of the Fight, the duo’s first show in Detroit. Along with originals, prints, and sculptural works, one of the walls featured a mural from the Patrick’s as they took inspiration from the Motor City’s revival in the last several years. The Brooklyn-based artists also unveiled five large-scale painted, stenciled, and silkscreened works on wood panels in the adjacent alleyway aka “The Belt,” the gallery’s public exhibition space (more on this later). Previews: Franco “Jaz” Fasoli – “Pretension Of Greatness” @ BC Gallery

Three years after his debut show (covered) at BC Gallery, Franco Fasoli aka Jaz will be opening his new solo tomorrow night (June 29th) in Berlin. Entitled Pretension Of Greatness, the new body of work from the Buenos Aires artist features his newer technique with collage, drawing imagery from the tumultuous modern history of his country. Rounding out the show will be a selection of sculptures made of bronze and fabric. Continuing his long time collaboration with Prada, James Jean (interviewed) has followed up his recent work on their 2018 Resort Collection (covered) with work on their SS 2018 Collection. Comic books where the inspiration for the spring/summer season, something the Jean is familiar with as he first made his name creating the acclaimed cover illustrations for the comic series Fables as a young artist.
