POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Previews: Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

This Sunday, POW! WOW! Hawaii (more info here) kicks off with a re-occurring show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014). As in the past, the format is 12 x 12″ works, leading to a visually congruent display of artworks, some of which were inspired by island life. Oak Oak will also be presenting an installation as part of the exhibition and Shok-1 will be the featured artist. Streets: RETNA // The Beauty Project (Mexico City)

Recently in Mexico City, RETNA (featured) was invited in to create public art for The Beauty Project México. Painting his distinct script at the Cuauhtemoc building in the Tlatelolco neighborhood, the Los Angeles-based writer spent a few days working on the 21 story twin structures, his tallest intervention to date. Other artist who will be joining the project in the upcoming weeks include Alexis CILER, Olivia Steele, Saner, AEC (Interesni Kazki), Ericailcane and others. Discuss RETNA here. With his major retrospective still showing in Spain (covered), Mark Ryden (interviewed) has unveiled a side project he has been working on for quite some time. For the past year, the American artist has been busy designing the costumes and sets for a new ballet called Whipped Cream by renowned choreographer Alexei Ratmansky for the American Ballet Theater. Streets: Shepard Fairey – “Cultivate Harmony” (Las Vegas)

A couple days ago, Shepard Fairey (featured) wrapped up his latest large scale mural in Las Vegas, created for the Life is Beautiful festival and curated by Justkids. Entitled Cultivate Harmony, the 21 story high piece now graces the facade of the Plaza Hotel in downtown. For those that missed the unveiling of KAWS’ new virtual reality experience created with the help Visionaire, Artnet has nice recap of the event here. Visitors at the New York Public Library were taken on a studio visit with the Brooklyn-based artist, which quickly turns into a kaleidoscope of colors, misbehaving characters, and surreal imagery when he leaves the room. Upcoming: Okuda – “Lost Olympus” @ StolenSpace

Tonight (February 2nd) in London, StolenSpace will be holding the opening reception for Okuda’s new show entitled Lost Olympus. The new body of work from the Spanish artist features his representations of the mythological gods and characters from ancient Greece, painted in his signature multicolored geometric patterns. His vibrant imagery are sort of deconstructions as he mixes this many-hued approach with the other textures and patterns, a technique he also uses on the streets where he made his name. Tomorrow, January 29th (1-4pm), at the New York Public Library, Visionaire will unveiling its latest virtual reality experience featuring the work of KAWS. Previews: Ben Tolman – “WELTSCHMERZ” @ Gallery Neptune and Brown

Gallery Neptune and Brown in Washington, DC, will be holding the opening reception (5-7pm) tomorrow night (January 28th) for Ben Tolman’s new solo show. Collectively entitled WELTSCHMERZ, or WORLD PAIN in German, the new detailed drawings (ink and gouache on paper) from the locally-based artist tries to draw attention to ideas like corporate greed, dirty politics, and poverty. The compositions and imagery seem to take influence from artists like Hieronymus Bosch and M.C. Escher and must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Discuss Ben Tolman here.
