Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]

Upcoming: Lydia Fong, Todd James, Steve Powers, Alicia McCarthy @ Muddguts

Tomorrow night (April 20th) in Brooklyn, Lydia Fong, Todd James, Steve Powers, and Alicia McCarthy will be putting on a show at Muddguts. For those in the know, as well as from the artwork used to promote the exhibition, it looks like Fong (aka Barry McGee) will be joining his Street Market buddies James and Powers and has invited his Mission School art movement colleague McCarthy to the party as well. Head over between 6-8 pm (427 Graham Ave) if you want to enjoy the festivities. […]

Discuss Steve “ESPO” Powers here.

Banksy – “Dismaland” @ Tropicana (Weston Super Mare – UK), Walls

Though the main focus of Dismaland was on art and creating installations & sculptures that visitors can interact with, Banksy and his team involved other artists that either visually or otherwise match his aesthetics or theme. So along with the ones presenting their gallery works, they included several artists whose primary form or place of expression are the streets or public spaces. These days where street art is building almost a negative reputation of being generic, decorative and more about quantity (or size), than the quality (or message), the […]

Streets: Asphalte Festival (Belgium)

The city of Charleroi in Belgium was the host for the first edition of the Asphalte Urban Art Biennial. Taking place from the beginning of May till the end of October, this event includes theatrical programming, dance and academic programs, concerts, as well as urban and street art projects. Created as an initiative of the City of Charleroi and its cultural operators, the visual component of the event was curated by Alice van den Abeele and Raphaël Cruyt  from Alice Gallery. The idea was to produce a […]

Showing: “Just Before Brazil” @ Alice Gallery

Alice Gallery in Brussels recently opened a big group show entitled Just Before Brazil. The idea was to showcase the artists they invited to the Asphalte festival in Charleroi and to share with the world their works before everyone’s attention gets focused on Brazil and football. But, after settling on the first lineup of artists, they’ve decided to add few more names and ended up with an impressive list of 52 artworks by 26 artists from various parts of the globe, various backgrounds, and various ways […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Miami Project

The Miami Project successfully launched its second rendition during Basel week with a well-curated selection of U.S. galleries, including such notable names as Yossi Milo, Joshua Liner, Mark Moore, Richard Heller and David B. Smith. Located in the Wynwood Arts District, the young art fair focused on primary representation of emerging and mid-career artists, which was a nice counterpoint to its much larger neighbor, Art Miami. Overall, Miami Project was well-attended, and both galleries and collectors seemed very enthusiastic about the showing. Below is a […]

Steve “ESPO” Powers – Remixed Kanye West “Yeezus” Cover

ESPO (featured), who recently showed in Brussels at the Alice Gallery (covered), found time for a fun project last week. Taking the tempting blank slate of the minimalistic cover of Kanye West’s new Yeezus album, Mr. Powers covered the entire case with his characteristic imagery. The alternate cover takes quotes from controversial rapper himself as inspiration for the creation. Learn a little more about it here. Discuss ESPO here.
