Openings: “Unnatural – Natural History” @ Royal West of England Academy

Curated by Coates and Scarry, the  exhibition entitled Unnatural-Natural History recently launched at the Royal West of England Academy with many of the participating artists present at the opening. Featuring paintings, photography, drawings, sculptures and installations, 38 local and international artists are currently displaying their artistic interpretation of an alternative world. Following genetic mutations and environmental pressure, natural objects have been metamorphosed into unexpected forms in a place no longer ruled by humans. At the entrance, guests are greeted by feathered installations by Kate McGuire. The viewer’s mind is then immediately […]

Streets: Komafest (Part II) – Vhils

After opening a duo of shows in Lisbon and Paris, where he also was able to make his mark on the city streets in those major metropolises, Vhils moves north to the much smaller town of Vardø. The relatively tiny Norwegian town is the site of Komafest, a street art festival which hopefully will help revitalize a region that has suffered from depopulation and the decay. The Portuguese artist applied his unique technique to a something we haven’t seen before, a wooden building – with a pretty sweet result […]

Streets: Olek (Brazil)

Last we heard from Olek, she was in her home town of Katowice working her yarn-bombing magic on a couple of escavators for a street art festival. Now, the Polish knitter, who was recently named as one of the Smithsonian’s 40 under 40: Craft Futures artists, has surfaced in São Paulo, Brazil to do some work for SESC where she created “Crocheted Jacaré” for their playground, covering an alligator shaped installation designed by Marcia Maria Benevento. Upcoming: REVOK – “Gilgamesh” @ Known Gallery

REVOK recently posted up some photos on his blog of the process leading up to his new body of work created for his solo show coming up at the end of the month in Los Angeles. Gilgamesh is set to open on July 28th at the Known Gallery with a selection of works created from found objects. These shots show the graffiti artist from the beginning of his process foraging for materials in the abandoned and dilapidated buildings of Detroit to the precise and increasingly […]

Streets: Komafest (Part I) – Ethos

Way above the polar circle, a small Norwegian island community has kicked off a street art festival – Komafest. Stavanger-based street artist Pøbel has invited a quality lineup of artists up to Vardø, Norway to paint up the town including E. B. Itso, Conor Harrington, Steve “ESPO” Powers, Husk mit navn, Atle Østrem, Horfe, Roa, Remed, Vhils, Ken Sortais, and Claudio Ethos. One of the first to arrive and probably the one that had to travel the farthest was the Sao Paulo-based Ethos who promptly […]

Streets: Aiko Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

Last week, we brought you the start of Aiko’s work on New York’s renowned Bowery & Houston mural location. Working through the course of several days the artist took her time to stencil and paint sections of the wall. As you can see from the detailed shots, Lady Aiko made more progress by implementing more colors on to the final product. Take a look at the completed mural below. Discuss Aiko here.

Openings: Meggs – “Truth In Myth” @ White Walls

Over the weekend, Australian-based painter Meggs opened his latest show Truth In Myth (previewed) at White Walls. The show featured a grand installation of a pyramid of skulls in a fully painted room, as well as a large street piece on the wall right outside the gallery. The new body of work consisted of paintings, collage, sculpture and mixed media that bridge the gap between past and present by fusing contemporary superhero elements with that of ancient mythology. Check out pics from opening night below. […]

Preview: Logan Hicks – “Structural Integrity” @ The Outsiders

This Friday night in London, Logan Hicks (interviewed) will be unveiling his stenciled renderings of urban landscapes at The Outsiders. Structural Integrity will also include a selection of photographs (printed on metallic paper) taken over the past 5 years giving the viewer an rare insight into life beneath cities of America and Europe. If you are in the area, stop by and see some incredibly detailed work, a result of layers upon layers of painstakingly cut stencils, something the New York-based street artist is known for. Discuss this […]

Streets: How & Nosm (Philadelphia)

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of watching How & Nosm as they completed a large wall on the LA Weekly building in Los Angeles. Now, the Spanish twins recently completed a new mural in Philadelphia (South 13th Street and Sansom Street) entitled Personal Melody. The New York-based duo initially used a 80′ boom lift that couldn’t reach the top, but with the delivery of a 125′ lift, the mural was able to be completed in just two days. Photos via Graffuturism. Discuss How & […]

Openings: David Ellis for “Go West” @ Mark Moore Gallery

The second half of the Joshua Liner curated Go West exhibition featured work from versatile artist David Ellis, which took up half of Los Angeles’ Mark Moore Gallery (see Kris Kuksi’s part in the show here). Those attending the opening in Culver City on Saturday night would have seen the NY-based artist’s paintings featuring his sinuous motif (also seen in a recent large-scale mural), a sound sculpture, as well as his co-opted vinyl record pieces. All the principals behind the showing were present (see above – […]
