Streets: KAWS – “BFF” Statue (Los Angeles)

While in Asia for back to back openings in Japan (covered) and Hong Kong (covered), KAWS also had a project he was working on in Los Angeles. Rising up high in its new home in Silicone Beach, the Brooklyn-based artist’s newest sculptural BFF statue now stands tall in front of a parking structure in Playa Vista. With this piece joining a recent one at the Hamad International Airport in Qatar and a permanent sculpture in Texas, we suspect his fans around the world will begin seeing more and more […]

Streets: Pejac – (New York) – Part I

Recently visiting New York City for the first time, Pejac took the opportunity to paint a couple murals that spoke to the city’s environmental impact, an issue that often plays a key role in his work. One of these was entitled Inner Strength (located at 2 Henry St), a elegant piece in Chinatown that makes effective use of the existing roll down shutter doors. By painting some of the reoccurring imagery in his work (cherry blossom and flocks of birds) bursting through in an illusory manner, the Spanish artist […]

Showing: Belin – “Fazes” @ Amanda Wei Gallery

Following up on the introduction of his Postneocubism body of work in Paris last June (covered), Miguel Ángel Belinchón aka Belin recently opened his Asian debut show with Amanda Wei Gallery in Hong Kong. Fazes features a new series of canvases done in the Spanish artist’s signature style, along with new pieces introducing more drawing-based, abstract pieces. As one of the more well-known hyper-realistic graffiti artists, Belin started composing postneocubism works after visiting Picasso’s museum in Malaga. Deconstructing his subjects into sections of meticulously rendered features, he creates vibrant compositions […]

Streets: Mark Jenkins x CALM – “Project 84” (London)

Starting a few days ago, passerbys of some of London’s ITV buildings were treated to an unsettling sight if their eyes lifted to the sky. What appeared to be 84 men, standing on the edge the rooftops as if about to jump, were installed by Mark Jenkins (interviewed) and collaborator Sandra Fernandez as part of a campaign being run by the Campaign against Living Miserably, or CALM. Dovetailing nicely with the  American street artist’s habit of leaving his signature packing tape works in the public arena for people […]

Upcoming: Aakash Nihalani – “Tilt” @ Wunderkammern (Milan)

Returning to work with Wunderkammern after a showing in their Rome location (covered) back in 2014, Aakash Nihalani (interviewed) is opening his latest solo tonight with the gallery’s space in Milan. Entitled Tilt, the new body of work will include a site-specific installation and a series of small-format works created with ink and paint on paper. Playing with geometric shapes and optical illusion-like effects, the American artist continues to refine the skills he acquired while working with just a roll of tape while making art in the […]

Basel Week HK ’18 / Openings: KAWS @ Galerie Perrotin

After a successful opening (covered) in Tokyo at Perrotin last week, KAWS dropped the second verse of his tour of Asia with a showing at the gallery’s Hong Kong location. The pieces on display played out like part two of a cohesive body of work featuring abstract hints of the beloved cartoon and pop culture characters that the Brooklyn-based artist continues to be fascinated with. Rounding out the exhibition timed to coincide with Basel Week Hong Kong was a large scale bronze version of his recently released pink […]

Basel Week HK ’18 / Openings: Osgemeos – “Deja Vu” @ Lehmann Maupin

One of the highlights of Basel Week Hong Kong for local fans and out of town visiting collectors was a solo from Osgemeos at Lehmann Maupin. Entitled Déjà Vu, the vibrant new body of work features the surreal imagery from the twins that we have grown to love including influences from the golden age of hip hop and their life as vandals. Rounding out the exhibition was a sound installation featuring modified speakers painted to resemble faces and some imaginative use of materials including sequins, cotton balls, […]
