Releases: David Flores – “Deathead”

Not only has David Flores been busy in the streets and in the gallery, he has also been working on a new figure entitled Deathead. The 10″ tall reinterpretation of Mickey melded with Totenkopf symbol utilized by the Prussian army during the time of Frederick the Great will be produced by Bic Plastics and reportedly come in five colorways. Video: JR x Massive Attack – “Encrages” @ Galerie Perrotin

Remember when renowned photographer JR (featured) recently returned to his home country of France for a solo exhibition entitled Encrages at Galerie Perrotin. The fresh show took over the spacious two story Paris gallery as well as utilized the ample outdoor area with his signature large-scale wheatpasting. Preview: Hush @ 941 Geary

Just weeks after unveiling an installation at Onethirty3 (covered), the UK based Hush (interviewed)  is currently working on his next exhibition scheduled to open on Saturday, January 21st. Returning to San Francisco after a showing back in 2010 (covered), the indoor-outdoor specialist will be presenting his gritty Asian-inspired creations at 941 Geary. Openings: Stephan Doitschinoff – Novo Asceticismo @ Jonathan LeVine

It’s been a while since we caught up with Stephan Doitschinoff (aka Calma). The Brazilian artist last showed with Jonathan Levine Gallery back in 2008 (covered) but now is back with a new series entitled Novo Asceticismo, which hits religious themes via mixed-media works rich in symbolism and highlighted by Latin text. Doitschinoff reflects on the sacrifice and deprivation necessary for the modern man to continue and live purely despite a society filled with vices and common mental traps. Streets: El Mac (Los Angeles)

Nearly two weeks ago, artist El Mac painted a new mural atop a busy West Hollywood building. Interestingly enough, hardly anyone noticed that it was taking place. That’s because this most recent work by the artist has been kept under wraps for this last part of the month. The mural will be unveiled alongside an L.A.
