There was no sign of KAWS this year in person at Art Basel Week Miami. Perhaps it’s because he is preparing for his upcoming show, FOCUS:KAWS (teased), at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Judging from this photo, the catalog is ready to go as well as some installed 20″ tondos in the background that look familiar. Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: RETNA

A major player during this year’s Art Basel Week Miami, it seemed like RETNA (featured) and his work was in demand everywhere. Not only did we see his handiwork at the Primary Projects group show, in the Wynwood District, and at various fairs, we also had the chance to attend a Q&A session at his temporary luxury home on Hibiscus Island. Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

This week’s world roundup of street work is heavily tilted towards Art Basel Week Miami. With so many artists in town, there was bound to be some overlap on walls and in some cases – collaborations. Not sure if the Buff Monster & COPE2 piece above was planned as a tag team effort, but they seem to fit nicely together. Anthony Lister – “Bogan Paradise” @ Gallery A.S.

Prolific Aussie artist Anthony Lister (interviewed) recently put on a show with Gallery A.S. entitled Bogan Paradise. After plastering Los Angeles with his work in August, this new show in his home country is staged in a recently de-zoned sex shop in Sydney’s Chinatown and challenges conceptions of the Australian identity – those attributes perceived as both positive and negative. In particular, Lister explores Larrikinism, “the name given to the Australian folk tradition of irreverence, mockery of authority and disregard for rigid norms of propriety.” More photos via Slamxhype after the […]

The latest book by Gestalten, Walls & Frames, edited by Maximiliano Ruiz focuses on emerging international street artists and documents how they are transitioning from street to galleries, using innovative tools and techniques that are shaping a new direction of contemporary art. To celebrate the international release, all 101 participating artists have created handmade cover sleeves that will be available for sale during the launch parties in London at POW on the 8th of December and Gestalten Space in Berlin on 15th of December. Openings: Evol & Friends @ Pictures On Walls

Following his recent installation in London Smithfield market (covered here), German artist EVOL and a full supporting cast of artists took over Pictures on Walls for the Christmas show with installations, sculptures, books and limited edition prints. Other featured artists include Banksy, Barminski, Dran, Tilt, James Cauty, Paul Insect, Wayne White, Might Mo, Todd James, Invader, Cept, Jerome Miller, Pacolli, Victor Van Gaasbeek, Zach Schrey and more. Basel Week Miami ’11: JR @ M Building

Yesterday, AM stopped by the M Building in Miami to photograph the newest exhibition from French photographer JR. This showing was an Art Basel Week Miami supplement to his current show at Galerie Perrotin and featured photos as well as wheatpasted found materials from his various projects in the past. Street activity has definitely been strong during Art Basel Week Miami, and this is one of the things that sets it apart from the more prestigious original fair in Switzerland. While walking through the myriad of streets where murals were being put up, we passed by Aussie couple Dabs Myla as they painted this piece. The wall was sponsored by LRG and was almost completed by the time the sun went down yesterday. More photos after the jump…
