Armory Week ’11: Scope

Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Oh, did we mention that there was an artistic experiment that featured five fraternity boys stuck in a box for four hours with nothing but a window, a microphone, cases of beer, […]

Showing: Zevs – “Liquidated Version” @ De Buck Gallery

We haven’t updated you on the whereabouts and works of Zevs in a while ever since his show and arrest in Hong Kong. It looks like the French street artist is currently showing at De Buck in New York with a new body of work entitled Liquidated Version. Continuing his assault on corporate identities and what they represent, the show features his signature dripping brand logos as well as other mix-media works. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Mysterious Al – ‘The Doomsday Papers’ @ StolenSpace

After more than ten years in the game, Mysterious Al finally got around to opening his first solo show The Doomsday Papers at StolenSpace this Thursday. When planning your first show, it must be a worrying time: Will anyone show up? Will they like the work….? It turns out Al’s show was the most packed we’ve seen at StolenSpace for a long time, and everyone AM spoke to enjoyed the work. We had a hint of what sort of work Al was making for this show when […]

Openings: Swoon – “Thekla” @ Metro Gallery

Swoon’s (interviewed) first solo exhibition in Australia closed last weekend at the Metro Gallery, but we have some pics for you of the opening for those who missed it. Entitled Thekla, the body of work, like many of the New York-based artist’s shows, included immersive installations as well as standalone pieces. Crafted from mostly from familiar imagery, the show also incoporated some new, never seen before pieces. More pics after the jump…

Previews: Jonathan Darby ‘Favela’ @ Signal Gallery

Jonathan Darby’s solo show Favela opens soon at the Signal Gallery, and this video teaser shows a little what to expect without giving the game away. Darby has linked up with CARF (Children at Risk Foundation) who work with street kids in Sao Paulo for the exhibition, and some of the proceeds from the show will go to the charity. Favela opens on Thursday 10th March, and from what we hear from Jonathan, will contain an entirely new series of paintings plus some pretty exciting […]

Previews: Michael De Feo – ‘Coming In From The Outside’ @ Orange Dot Gallery, London

Spring is just around the corner and The Flower Guy is set to open his first solo show in London this week at The Orange Dot Gallery. Michael De Feo will be presenting a new series of painting and prints in Coming In From The Outside, featuring a series of his iconic flowers which have graced so many city walls – in particular around his New York base – plus a series of hand finished prints based upon his figurative / portraiture based drawings. The […]

Auctions – “Under the Influence” @ Phillips de Pury & Co. New York

This Tuesday, Phillips de Pury & Company will be holding their more-accessible Under the Influence contemporary auction in New York. Among the lots are pieces by many of our favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Marcel Dzama, Phil Frost, and Barry McGee. One notable lot is Portrait 5, Stephen(s), 2009–2010, a collaborative work by Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano and Frank Stella, which debuted on the December 8, 2010 episode of The Colbert Report as part of an interview with Steve Martin and is now being sold […]

Openings: Slinkachu – ‘Concrete Ocean’ @ Andipa Gallery

Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. To the gallery’s credit, the complimentary bar never ran out of alcohol, which helped maintain a cheerful atmosphere throughout the evening. As for the art itself, guest reception was enthusiastic. […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion. On Thursday night, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery launched an epic exhibition for one of AM’s favorites, José Parlá. Entitled “Walls, Diaries and Paintings”, the show (previewed) filled the entire gallery space with José’s calligraphic style. Utilizing the techniques and reference photos which he has accumulated over the years on his travels, Parlá created a […]

Remember the limited edition boxsets we told you about that will be released at the upcoming “Revolutions” show by Shepard Fairey (featured)? Now we have some photos for you of how the album cover print set is coming together. It sounds like there will be two different limited edition sets with each containing 36 signed and numbered screen prints, a sticker sheet, and a stencil in a gold leaf embossed box. More pics after the jump…
