Last week, JR (interviewed) completed the latest installment of his ongoing project The Wrinkles Of The City in Turkey. The series which has seen the French artist paste up large scale photographs of the older citizens of various cities has already taken him to Cartagena, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Cuba, and Berlin since 2008. Take a look below as JR and his team navigated the vibrant streets of Istanbul as well skillfully worked with the architectural elements they encountered. Discuss JR here.
Last week, the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York hosted the opening of JR and José Parlá’s collaborative showing entitled The Wrinkles of the City, Havana. The joint works were based on the time they spent in Cuba a year ago painting street murals together (covered) as part of JR’s continuing project Wrinkles of the City where he photographs senior citizens and pastes their portraits on the walls of city buildings. An example of this was outside the showspace in the form of a mural which the two created several weeks ago (covered). Take a look at all the […]

As you have seen from our coverage of murals going up all over Berlin, JR (interviewed) was in town for a show. The Wrinkles of the City opened several weeks ago at Galerie Henrik Springmann with photographs, wheatpasted found objects, as well as a rare video installation from the French photograffeur. As you can see above, even one of the models he used for the street work made it to the opening. Check out more photos below… Photo credit: Positive-Propaganda. Discuss JR here.
JR, who we interviewed several days ago, has been working hard this past week (see Part I), pasting new work all over the city of Berlin for his Wrinkles of the City project and show at Gallerie Henrik Springmann. Just over a week since the French street artist arrived, he leaves the city having produced 18 different pieces in just seven days. As usual, much of the placement is sublime. Here are some photos below that JR sent us of a few of the finished walls. Discuss JR here.
It’s been a week since JR hit the streets of Berlin, working on almost twenty different walls around the city for his current project, Wrinkles of the City: Berlin, opening Wednesday night at Galerie Henrik Springmann. On day four, JR received a special visit from the elderly couple whose portrait is now pasted on the abandoned railway post office turned nightclub, Postbahnhof. The couple, now in their 80s, grabbed a brush and climbed the scaffolding to help with the pasting. Later, AM joined the French […]
French street artist and photographer JR is in Berlin this week, working on a new project that will span over 15 different buildings within the city limits. In conjunction with his Wrinkles of the City project, his new work will include portraits of elderly individuals who have, over time, witnessed and experienced the upheaval and transformation of the city of Berlin. One of the first pieces already completed shows a hand making a “West Side” symbol on a busy intersection in East Berlin. On April 17th […]
By now, you will have seen photos from the intriguing collaboration between JR (featured) and Jose Parla on the walls of Havana. Parla, with his Cuban roots, seems like the perfect partner in crime for the TED winning French artist as calligraphic stylings of the first meld seamlessly with the stark photos of the second. This next phase of JR’s Wrinkles Of The City project will coincide with the 11th Havana Biennial 2012 and feature photos from a previous trip to Cuba that the duo took back in […]
After bringing you a first glimpse of the next phase of the Wrinkles Of The City project from JR (featured) where he is collaborating with good friend and artist Jose Parla in Cuba, it looks like the two are in the thick of the action now. Working on walls throughout the city of Havana, the sublime mix of the French street photographer’s candid shots of the Cubanos along with Parla’s calligraphic messages has fans of the duo’s work buzzing. The street activity has been timed to […]
As we mentioned back in March along with set of photos from JR (featured) taken during a trip to Cuba, the French photograffeur was prepping for the next phase of his The Wrinkles Of The City project. It looks like that project has been started already as a collaboration with Jose Parla in Havana as evidenced by a glimpse of the action in the pic above. We’ll bring you more news soon but for now, enjoy more photos from Cuba after the jump…
