Over the weekend, Lebasse Projects unveiled the new solo exhibition, Surface to Air, by artist Thomas Doyle. The artwork included a variety of photographs and sculptural work which touched upon the themes of destruction in suburbian landscapes. One half of the exhibit featured an incredible collection of miniatures that were created with an insane amount of detail and craftsmanship. Although the pieces were small in size, it demanded the viewer to truly pay close attention to the intricacies and settings which Doyle attempted to recreate. […]

On a busy art weekend in Los Angeles, another show to visit on Saturday night, November 12th, is Thomas Doyle’s solo at LeBasse Projects. The NY-based artist will be filling the Culver City showspace with a continuation of his Distillation series, an uncanny intersection of destruction and domestic life in the form of his model-like sculptural work. Surface to Air will also feature the debut of Doyle’s new Foregone series, consisting of photographic portraits of the child figures that feature prominently in his three-dimensional work. […]

Miniature specialist Thomas Doyle recently entered this piece “Firing for Effect” into the ArtPrize event in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Although he did not win, this wonderful new sculptural work featuring a sphere within a sphere was exhibited at the Grand Rapids Public Museum and illustrates how increasingly complex his work is becoming. We’re looking forward to his future solo show at LeBasse Projects (currently projected to be towards the end of 2011), where he last showed in May (covered). Some detailed shots after the jump…

The first stop of the Culver City Artwalk for AM was the group show at LeBasse Projects. Along with a strong lineup of gallery regulars, artists new to us such as Jean-Pierre Roy were featured during this annual event. His colorful paintings of imaginary landscapes drew us in with their dream-like vibrancy and fancy. More pics after the jump…

Last Saturday, AM attended Copro Gallery for the anniversary of one of our favorite magazines – Hi-Fructose. Known for bringing some of the best pop surrealist art coverage for the past 5 years, Hi-Fructose curated a diverse and top notch mix of some of the best talent in the industry. An artist we recently fell in love with at the Culver City Artwalk, Thomas Doyle, was commissioned by the New York Times Magazine to create a sculpture for their “Infrastructure” issue. This issue, which hits newsstands today, focuses on architecture, a perfect fit for half of what Doyle does so well – create small scale replicas of different structures and buildings placed in terrariums.
