Last week in Luxembourg, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) presented new works entitled Somewhere Here at Zidoun-Bossuyt Galley. The Japanese artist’s new solo included a series of vibrant new paintings as well as steel sculptures created in monochromatic gold and silver. The New York-based Matsuyama’s characters were both rendered against complex “deco-florative” patterns in irregularly shaped canvases set in striking contrast against the white walls as well as were seen in a more minimalistic outline in sculptural form both inside and outside the gallery space. Tomorrow night (November 18th) in Luxembourg at Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) will be unveiling a selection of new paintings and a series of steel sculptures rendered in monochromatic gold and silver. Entitled Somewhere Here, the solo from the Brooklyn-based artist features complex compositions of expressionless figures seen against “Deco-florative” patterns. A couple weekends ago, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) & Lesley Kehoe Galleries invited a small group of guests to his Brooklyn studio to participate in a formal tea gathering and to watch a Butoh performance. The unique setting featured a background of the Japanese artist’s paintings, juxtaposed with the skills of Australian born and Paris-based Ueda Sōko Ryū Tea Master and Butoh artist Adam Wojcinski. Several weeks ago, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his third solo show at Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco (previewed), titled Come with me. While preparing for his next big solo at Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) recently hosted a studio visit from prolific art patron Swizz Beatz. After a recent landmark showcase at Harbour City in Hong Kong (covered), Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) headed to Melbourne for his next project. Over the weekend, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his new showcase (arranged by LeBasse Projects) at Harbour City in Hong Kong. Like other artists before him – KAWS (here), Yayoi Kusama, Yue Minjun (here), and Florentijn Hofman (here) – the New York based artist’s work dominated the main entrance and was also supported by a small exhibition of his work. With his exhibition Palimpsest at Harvard’s Reischauer Institute (covered) still on view, the always ambitious Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opens The Standard Rendez-Vous at Zidoun & Bossuyt in Luxembourg. AM recently stopped by the new studio space of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed). The Brooklyn-based artist was busy getting ready for his solo exhibition at Luxembourg’s Zidoun & Bossuyt that opened yesterday. It was great to see Matsu focusing more on larger paintings and also the return of his abstract “sundance” style that we’ve come to love.
