First Look: Banksy – “Gross Domestic Product” (Greater London)

An unusual new housewares “store” called Gross Domestic Product opened overnight in the south London town of Croyd0n. Turns out Banksy has now confirmed that the elaborate art installation is his, an attempt to hold off a greeting card company from seizing legal custody of his name by creating his own range of merchandise. Last weekend in Detroit, imagery from REVOK’s Spirograph & Tape Loops series enveloped a series of musical performances creating a truly immersive experience for the audience. Making an uninvited appearance in the city during the Venice Biennale, Banksy decided to set up shop and appear to sell his art on the streets along with all the other vendors. The difference being he didn’t have a permit to do so and the art done in the elusive artist’s uniquely tongue-in-cheek style. Streets: Pejac – “Gold Mine” Project @ El Dueso Prison (Spain)

Continuing his penchant of working on unconventional creative projects, Pejac recently completed a few interventions at the Penitentiary Center of El Dueso in Spain. Situated at the entrance of artist’s hometown of Santander, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the remains of one of Napoleon’s old forts and is considered the oldest prison in the country. Last week, the Lotte Museum in Seoul unveiled an expansive retrospective entitled Eternal Journey featuring the art of James Jean (interviewed). The exhibition features over 500 works from the American artist including pieces from his time as a comic book artist, sketchbooks, videos, digital art, and sculptures like a new eight foot tall stained glass obelisk.
