After introducing you last month to the Psychic Temple project from James Jean (interviewed), we now have an update with some on site photos for you to enjoy. A collaboration between the nomadic Jean and architect Brandon Shigeta, the intriguing undertaking is commissioned by interTrend in Long Beach for their new library. Tonight in Los Angeles, the multidisciplinary work of Patrick Martinez will be on display at New Image Art. FORBIDDEN FRUIT will be the locally-based artist’s first solo in two years and the first with the gallery. Known for his neon pieces that take inspiration from hip hop, graffiti, and perspectives of minority culture, Martinez has created a body of work that includes pieces that combine his signature technique with sculpture and painting. Kicking off the second edition of the ALT!rove street art festival this year (from 30th April to 9th May) is Clemens Behr with an impressive new mural. This year’s theme is “Abstractism – space>place” and will also feature work from 108, Alberonero, Giorgio Bartocci, Ciredz, Erosie, Graphic Surgery, Sbagliato, Sten Lex and Tellas. In addition to painting walls in Catanzaro, Italy, each artist will participate in a group show at Casa ALT!rove along with others like 2501, Martina Merlini, Moneyless, and Domenico Romeo. Later this month (April 25th), Deth P. Sun will be opening another show (see 2013) at Brooklyn’s Grumpy Bert entitled Being and Nothingness. The solo exhibition will feature more of his whimsical acrylic on wood paintings based on the adventures of his signature cat-like character, along with plays with text, rounded out by lush supplemental paintings. Showing through April 11th at the Hin Bus Depot in Penang, Malaysia is Different Strokes, a group show curated by Giancarlo Petrucci of Graffiti Prints. The exhibition includes contributions from Ernest Zacharevic, Sandra Chevrier, Icy and Sot, Martin Whatson, Beejoir, Alexface, BON, Snik, Nafir, Sabek, Levalet, Roamcouch, and Gabriel Pitcher. On April 25th, Aryz will be opening a pop up show in Los Angeles (1340 E. 6th St.) from 8-10 pm entitled PARAL•LEL. The exhibition from the Barcelona-based muralist will feature the most extensive collection of indoor works to date. Divided into two rooms, the work in one will be a traditionally hung set of paintings while the other space promises to consist of a “high-energy onslaught of expressive works.” This separation plays on the title of the show, and refers to the non-intersecting parts and contradictions […]
This Saturday night (April 11th) at Honor Fraser in Los Angeles, Tomoo Gokita will be unveiling a new solo show entitled Bésame Mucho. The exhibition appears to build on the monochromatic series seen in New York (covered) earlier this year composed of black and white gouache canvases featuring his distinct form of obscured portraiture. Not only will there be individual focused paintings, but also large scale group compositions (like the one seen above) from the Tokyo-based artist. Discuss Tomoo Gokita here.
After making his mark in Hawaii for POW! WOW!, Ernest Zacharevic traveled across the Pacific to spend some time in Los Angeles. While there, he worked on a mural in Culver City ( 3201 La Cienega Ave) on a building along with Nosego and Hueman, which was organized by Branded Arts. Featured a tattered Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs living out of a shopping cart, the new piece features the Lithuanian artist’s dry wit as well as his signature incorporation of found three-dimensional elements to his work. Shortly after his complex solo show in Tel Aviv (announced), Know Hope flew to Paris to set up his solo show opening on the 11th of April at Openspace Gallery. Water Takes the Shape of its Container will be a French debut for the Israeli artist, where he will be showing a series of his latest poetic works.
