Artists like Dave Kinsey (seen above), Victor Castillo, Cyrcle., Devngosha, James Haunt, Brittany Segal, Dan Quintana, Bon Nielsen, Gregory Siff, Aaron De La Cruz, Paige Smith, Kristin Bauer, RETNA, Sarah Sandin, Aaron De la Cruz, Bone Thrower, Cole Sternberg, and Fidia Falaschetti were asked to customize and paint real steer skulls and display it along with original artwork. For those who missed Jonathan Yeo’s exhibition (covered) at the National Portrait Gallery in London, you may want to head north to The Lowry in Manchester. Portraits sees the British artist’s work travel up for another museum showing, featuring many of his most famous subjects including Kevin Spacey, Damien Hirst, Helena Bonham Carter, George Bush (cast in one of Yeo’s porn-infused collages), and others. On May 15th, Mobstr will be opening a show (RSVP needed, details below) at The Old Truman Brewery entitled Sex, Drugs & Painting Walls Canvases. Known for his witty text based works in the streets, the UK-based artist will be transferring his aesthetic from walls to canvases. Rounding out the exhibition, which will run for less than a week, will be a series of installations. Discuss Mobstr here.
One of the satellite fairs we make a point to catch during Armory Week is Scope. Hosting a variety of genres, the event featured a diverse mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with here on AM. This week’s Art Focus sees us taking a look at the unsettling work of Fabio Magalhaes. The young artist hails from Brazil, where he is based in the city of Salvador, also where he studied at the Federal University of Bahia. Working primarily in oils, Magalhaes paints as though he was a serial killer, with images of torture and body parts, and certainly it would be concerning if he used true photo references. Mazer Lazer recently unveiled their latest music video Aerosol Can featuring Pharrell and the artistic stylings of Mike Giant. In the footage, you can see the heavily tattooed (last covered by us in 2012) Bay Area artist showing off his calligraphy skills as he writes out the song lyrics, augmented by graphics. Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia recently opened a group show titled Department of Neighborhood Services on the 11th of April. Showing new works by Isaac Lin, Dan Murphy and Barry McGee, the exhibition is yet another collaboration of artists who worked together on different projects for over a decade. After taking part in This is Not a Toy show (covered) curated by Pharrell Williams, the Argentine collective Doma recently opened an exhibition at Logo Galeria in Sao Paulo. Titled Multiverse, this is their first solo in Brazil, and a big step forward towards introducing their work to a wider crowd.
