With the art world focus on Hong Kong right now because of Art Basel (covered), AM paid another high profile show a visit (also see Murakami & Basquiat). Thursday night saw the explosive opening of an exhibition of works from the late New York graffiti legend Keith Haring paired with pieces from the Los Angeles-based rising star RETNA. Held on the 75th floor of Central Plaza, the second highest building on the island after IFC, panoramic views greeted attendees as they checked out the showing presented by Andy […]

Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Layla Kawashima For Arrested Motion. Discuss Jean-Michel Basquiat here.

This Saturday (May 25th) marks the return of Eishi Takaoka to Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles for another solo showing. Entitled Waiting, the exhibition will feature the serene floating heads that the Japanese artist has become know for. Each sculpture comprises of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments and although they display an outwardly calm façade, their bottled-up emotions manifest as outlandish formations that are often seen sprouting from each face.

Tomorrow night (May 23rd) at the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles, tattoo and fine artist Scott Campbell will be opening a new solo show entitled Things Get Better. The new series of ink paintings depict his “Frankenguns,” hand-made contraptions built inside prisons to administer tattoos to inmates. This culmination of a personal project he started two years ago took him to the inside of Mexican prisons with improvised tools, a true art form that contrasts with superficiality of the contemporary tattoo world. Check out some preview images below […]

Earlier this year, our EU correspondent Henrik Haven headed over to visit Michael Johansson’s studio in Malmø. The Swedish artist was in the midst of preparing for his show Familar Abstractions that just ended at the  Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway (more on this soon). Famous for his hued fabricated cube assemblage made from everyday objects, Johansson’s space was understandably organized by careful color coding. Interestingly enough, you can get an idea of his process by seeing the equipment in his studio. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Discuss Michael Johansson […]
