Tomorrow night (May 25th), the Zombie group exhibition will be opening at the Last Rites Gallery in New York. Featuring a roster hand-selected by Travis Louie to give their artistic interpretation of the undead, the show is sure to be an interest among fans of these artists. To coincide with the opening of Art Basel Hong Kong (covered), the local Gagosian Gallery branch has opened up a new exhibition of Jean Michel-Basquiat’s work, a first for the former British colony. On display were multiple paintings, some large, from the late great New York-based graffiti artist, with a showing similar to the one held at the NY Gagosian earlier this year (covered). This Saturday (May 25th) marks the return of Eishi Takaoka to Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles for another solo showing. Entitled Waiting, the exhibition will feature the serene floating heads that the Japanese artist has become know for. Each sculpture comprises of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments and although they display an outwardly calm façade, their bottled-up emotions manifest as outlandish formations that are often seen sprouting from each face.
Black and Blue is an upcoming two-person exhibition featuring Ryan Bubnis and Lucas Irwin. The pair have set themselves the challenge of dealing with a limited colour palette for the artwork within the exhibition which will feature work from a variety of mediums including painting, drawing and sculpture. Yesterday saw the opening of Asia’s preeminent art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, housed in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). Tomorrow night (May 23rd) at the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles, tattoo and fine artist Scott Campbell will be opening a new solo show entitled Things Get Better. The new series of ink paintings depict his “Frankenguns,” hand-made contraptions built inside prisons to administer tattoos to inmates. This culmination of a personal project he started two years ago took him to the inside of Mexican prisons with improvised tools, a true art form that contrasts with superficiality of the contemporary tattoo world. After a succesful showing for Takashi Murakami in Los Angeles at Blum & Poe (covered), the renowned Japanese artist has returned to Asia for a solo showing at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong. The show which opened last night includes a selection of paintings & sculptures and was timed nicely to welcome in collectors in town for Art Basel (HK edition). Earlier this year, our EU correspondent Henrik Haven headed over to visit Michael Johansson’s studio in Malmø. The Swedish artist was in the midst of preparing for his show Familar Abstractions that just ended at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway (more on this soon). Famous for his hued fabricated cube assemblage made from everyday objects, Johansson’s space was understandably organized by careful color coding. International art collective Agents of Change recently opened a group showing at David Bloch Gallery in Marrakech. Entitled Unfolding, the showing brought together Steve More, Derm, Carlos Mare, LX One, Remi Rough and Jaybo. The AoC cast is ever expanding and contains different styles of art brought in by the widely cast influences of the collective group.
