Brooklyn artist Julia Chiang recently unveiled a new body of work at New York’s Fuse Gallery. Entitled In And Out And In Between, this latest grouping created seem to be a confluence of styles which Julia has worked on previously. These new paintings are also hanging sculptures which combines Julia’s painted “drops” and hand crafted ceramic works. It’s been a week since JR hit the streets of Berlin, working on almost twenty different walls around the city for his current project, Wrinkles of the City: Berlin, opening Wednesday night at Galerie Henrik Springmann. On day four, JR received a special visit from the elderly couple whose portrait is now pasted on the abandoned railway post office turned nightclub, Postbahnhof. Last year, we shared a project with you that was asking for funding on kickstarter – the first narrative film based on the story of Shepard Fairey. As some of you may know (or even supported), the money raiser was fully funded – and now, the finished movie has been released online on the official website. Last weekend at the Corey Helford Gallery, the ghostly works of Kazuki Takamatsu were put on display at the opening reception. Patrons and collectors in Los Angeles took in what we already saw from Basel Week Miami last year – the almost glowing, mostly monochromatic portraits created through a personalized process by the Japanese artist. The topographical rendering is a result of both computer as well as traditional painting techniques and really make the image “pop” from the canvas. Over the weekend, the TrustoCorp collective opened their solo show entitled The Future Is Blight at the LeBasse Projects in Culver City. Along with all new works featuring their subversive humor, many crafted from modified corporate logos, the LA-based crew also included large-scale versions of the co-branded cereal box (a collaboration with Shepard Fairey) that they have been surreptitiously placing at local supermarkets. Travis Louie’s (interviewed) newest solo exhibition titled Monsters On Their Day Off opened April 9th at the Roq la Rue Gallery. Referencing century old photographs, Louie brings his impossibly rendered style to the Seattle gallery, depicting monsters in their down time, when they’re not playing monster. The acrylics are so exquisitely rendered that the images appear soft and delicate, just as a photograph might appear had it been taken in the late 19th century.
