Last Friday in Hong Kong, Meggs made the 4500 mile journey from Australia again for another solo exhibition (see 2010) at the Above Second Gallery. With paintings, sculptures, and wall murals infused with his urban aesthetic and comic-inspired imagery filling the showpace, fans who attended the opening for Journey is the Reward were certainly not disappointed. Throw in some work on the streets of the city-state and it was definitely another productive trip. More photos after the jump…

Last month, Kehinde Wiley’s exhibition at The Jewish Museum of New York opened its doors to the public with a selection of large-scale paintings, including one in the museum’s permanent collection. The showing paired with some synergism the works from the Israel portion of the painter’s continuing The World Stage series (seen last year at Roberts & Tilton) with some of the traditional Jewish papercuts and textiles from institution’s collection. Showing side by side, attendees were able to compare and better understand Wiley’s process of overlaying […]
We have some exciting news for Twist fans out west. Right on the heels of announcing an upcoming exhibition from George Condo set for opening this Saturday, the PRISM Gallery in Los Angeles has given word that Barry McGee has “next” (come May 12th). What a glorious run of three shows for the architectural showspace, as they only recently played host to Os Gemeos’ mind-blowing installations and paintings. If the Bay-area legend’s 2009 showing at the gallery is any indication, fans are in for a […]
Last Saturday evening, Amsterdam-based artist Niels Shoe Meulman’s (NSM) exhibition Justified Scriptures opened at 941 Geary. The works in the show meshes his “calligraffiti” with repetition and abstract elements, to create what he describes as “Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin.” This exhibition reflects the road he has traveled as an artist – starting out with being a graffiti legend 80’s, to later becoming a designer/typographer who eventually starts a design company and then gets into advertising. The show also features a large installation at […]
