Another show we visited in Culver City on Saturday night was Jim Houser’s showing at LeBasse Projects. Featuring meticulously constructed installations of his paintings and sculptural items, As Quiet As Itʼs Kept put on display the Philly artist’s signature patchwork of favorite items, creatures, words, symbols that for this exhibition was inspired by the impact of fatherhood and explores and the new responsibilities faced. On Saturday night, painter Amy Sol (interviewed) unveiled works she created for Numina, her newest solo at the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring 10 acrylic on wood panel pieces, the show was inspired by the world “numinous,” chosen not necessarily for it’s meaning but also for the shape and sound of the word itself. This Saturday night, March 17th, Todd Schorr (featured) makes a return to Merry Karnowsky with a new selection of paintings collectively entitled Neverlasting Miracles. Over the past couple years, every time we have stopped by Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) studio for a visit (here, here and here), we saw evidence of some pretty sweet customs he had been working on when he had extra time. Taking classic toys and figures and remixing them with wood, clay, and paint, the new pieces were changed to have classic Yamamoto features. A couple weeks ago, the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica hosted the opening for Corey Arnold’s Wolf Tide. The vibrant new work by the Portland-based photographer are a series of shots taken during his experience working as a commercial fisherman in Alaska. His travels have taken him to the Bering Sea, Europe, South Africa, the Atlantic, and the Arctic. and his subjects include humans, eagles, gulls, deer, vast seascapes and surreal landscapes. As a way to pay tribute to those who have passed, artist often paint murals in remembrance of their friends who have fallen along the way. After a recent fitting piece in collaboration with Augustine Kofie (featured) to remember DASH 2000, a former member of the UTI (Under The Influence) graffiti crew, El Mac has now painted one for Marcos “Verse” Vasquez in Mid-City, Los Angeles.
