Herbert Baglione’s solo at the Iguapop Gallery in Spain opened last weekend with a series of new paintings, wall murals, and installations. We heard much from one of our favorite Brazilian artists since his show in SF, but it look as though “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” is another beautiful body of work with a cooler and more muted pallette. AM was on hand to document the creation of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) latest outdoor project on the mural space hosted by Deitch Projects at the corner of Manhattan’s prime Houston & Bowery Street. As teased, the final product was true to the preview image which we first released. Armed with cans of spray paint, vats of wheat paste and a few “cherry pickers”, the Obey crew (Dan, Nick and Zee) braved the unexpected downpours to build this tremendous new mural. Opening alongside “Meticulous Engagements” at the Shooting Gallery was White Walls’ “New Directions” a group show consisting of five talents that the gallery has been building this past year. Featuring Mark Warren Jacques (pictured above), Henry Gunderson (interviewed), Akira Beard, Robert Burden, and Cheryl Molnar. Sometimes, we get spoiled at AM with behind the scenes studio visits where we see much of the art work before show openings, but in this case, our visit to David Choe’s (featured) studio definitely did not spoil our appetite for his latest series of works which were revealed at a private opening last night. AM swung by Culver City’s Scion Space as a large group of artists, namely Adam Wallacavage, Bill Daniel, Chris Stain, Dan Monick & Caitlin Reilly, Dueling VHS, Justin Van Hoy, Kime Buzzelli, and Rocky Grimes, were busy building out and setting up eight unique and different rooms throughout the massive space. Kristen Schiele’s solo show “Elektra” opened this past Wednesday evening at New York’s Sloan Fine Art. We love Kristen’s use of multiple mediums and her thrilling mixture of oil paint and screen print in her compositions featuring skewed architecture and a cast of 70’s femme noir characters.
