AM recently had the pleasure of visiting with Tat Ito at the Queens, NY, studio that he shares with his assistant Yuyu Yang. Readers may remember that we thought that Ito was one of the standout new artists included in Joshua Liner Gallery’s excellent summer group show (covered). Well, Mr. Liner must have agreed with us, because Ito has a show with the gallery scheduled for February 2010, and from what we saw during our studio visit, it’s going to be a stunner.

London’s Folio Society recently released a new printing of William Golding’s classic novel “Lord of the Flies,” illustrated by uber-talented, Brooklyn-based artist/illustrator Sam Weber. The edition contains several beautiful images painted especially by Weber in watercolor, finished digitally, and reproduced in four-color offset printing for the book. In addition, the front cover binding is a single color lithograph on red book cloth with white letterpressed accents. Opening this Saturday is the second solo show by noted Chinese artist Liu Ye for New York’s Sperone Westwater Gallery. The show, entitled “Leave Me in the Dark,” consists of a new collection Liu Ye’s narritive and illustrative paintings of solitary figures, mostly young women. His cartoonish style may seem simple at first glance, but like Yoshitomo Nara, Liu Ye’s works often convey quiet but powerful emotions and stories. See other images, after the jump.
We stopped by last night at the Carmichael Gallery to take a look at how the Dan Witz show was shaping up. Entitled “Dark Doings,” Witz opted to base his show around his street work this time around as he is also known for his light infused oil paintings. In anticipation of his coming group show with Logan Hicks at Show & Tell Gallery (previewed), our friend Butterfly met up with C215 aka Christian Guemy to visit his new studio in the neighborhood of Vitry-sur-Seine of Paris. The tour was followed up by a cool street session where C215 worked the neighborhood. The ever creative urban artist stenciled his new surroundings and worked to create pieces representative of his trips from all around the world. More after the jump.
Last night, Greg Simkins aka Craola (interviewed) opened his show “The Pearl Thief” at the LA location of Gallery 1988. Featuring his largest painting to date (glimpses of which you saw in our studio visit) and a riddle/puzzle that lead to a prize of an original painting from Greg, show-goers left with plenty to talk about. “The Pearl Thief” painting (seen above), was pretty amazing. Last week saw the opening of a new exhibition of work by leading Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun. The show, which is presented at the New York location of Arario Gallery, is entitled “Smile-isms” and is comprised of lithographs, several statues and one large-scale painting, all featuring the grinning self-portraits for which Minjun is known. Another pretty big show is going down this week in New York at the Skarstedt Gallery. Japanese sensation Aya Takano will be opening her first solo show in NY on November 5th entitled “Reintegrating Worlds,” and you best believe AM will be eagerly on hand to take in her new body of work.
