Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art School with Ron English

On Valentine’s Day, Molly Crabapple invited AM to participate in a “life drawing” event called Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. The guest artist for this session was our friend Ron English. Our first thought was… “There’s going to be a bunch of hardcore artist types sitting with their easels circling a ‘neck-ed’ model. Well, we were wrong…” Dr. Sketchy was anything but… So being the “Anti-Art” school, they hosted the event at a burlesque bar crowded with beautiful people excited to socialize and channel their inner artist. The subject was Ron English’s famous “Cow Girl”. Molly apparently kidnapped someone from DreamWorks and transformed the “drawing model” into a stunning real life “Cow Girl”.

Read more, see the amazing pictures, and a little surprise from Ron and Molly for you readers after the jump!

Who doesn't like utters...?

Who does not like utters...?

Dr. Sketchy’s reminded us of Baby Tattooville’s life-drawing (here) session where artists and participants got to down scotches while sketching to their hearts content.  However, instead of once a year, it’s literally every other week. We saw beginners with sketchbooks to pros who brought their watercolor sets, so no matter what artistic level you are, everyone is welcome to tweak their skills.

We also found out that the anti-art school was not only a sketch party with some very attractive peeps hanging out, drinking and sharpening their drawing skills localized to New York.  Dr. Sketchy’s is actually all over the globe.  From London to Melbourne, Tokyo to Scotland, there may be a Dr. Sketchy’s near you. Throw in the fact that every Dr. Sketchy’s in NYC happens to be at a burlesque bar with plenty of “liquid inspiration” flowing to keep the drawing party kicking.  Make sure to visit their website and join in the fun.

How long do you think this took me?

How long do you think this took me?

Only 5 mins...

Only 5 mins...

Good news… We got Ron English and Molly Crabapple to take 5 mins out of their hosting duties to draw for us and they gave us these two gorgeous drawings to give to two lucky readers.

Bad News… Ron loved Molly’s drawing so much that he “won” the drawing. So therefore, we have only Ron’s “Cow Girl” drawing to give away.  Just leave a comment and tell us what you think about the Dr. Sketchy website before Feb 28th, and we’ll select one winner randomly.

Sorry guys I "won" the drawing from Molly... - Ron

I think the Dr. Sketchy’s website is swell in many respects, though I’m sad the next one in SF is tomorrow, which conflicts with other plans I have. With that said, the videos are a nice touch – more, please! We like to voyeuristically view other Dr. Sketchy events and maybe pick up a few ideas of how to make our local ones even more…sketchy? Oh, that was bad, I know, but what can one do? One takes their opportunities as they come.

The site has all the prerequisites – and that’s good, because missing one shows lack of forethought and is inconsiderate to your audience. And we wouldn’t want that, now, would we?

Stylistically – simple and to the point. We enjoy that. I would change only one thing – maybe adding a bit o’ drop shadow or other style to the letters that are on the images for ‘book’, ‘photoblog’, ‘start’, etc. so as to make them slightly more readable. But hey – that’s just me. I’m no authority on this or anything.

Oh, and Molly – *very* easy on the eyes. You really can’t go wrong with lovely ladies on the site. Nosirreebob.

    Goodbye!
