Openings: An Afternoon With Greg Simkins @ G1988LA

AM dropped by Gallery 1988 LA this past Saturday and met up with our friend Greg “Craola” Simkins. Greg spent the afternoon treating everyone to live painting (previewed). Seeing Greg paint live is a rare occurrence and was truly a special treat. In addition, two different laser-engraved skate decks released along with a new print “Here Stands Matt Riddle.” Only one skate deck design was announced for this event, but a suprise second “black” design skate deck (limited to 15) was offered on Saturday as […]

Openings: Invader & WK Interact @ Jonathan Levine

On Saturday, Invader and WK Interact drew a big crowd trying to catch a glimpse of the two hard-working artists from Europe’s Street Art scene. It was a treat to see both artists create large sized works to fill the walls of Jonathan Levine’s multi-room gallery. The works from WK conveyed much raw energy and emotion as hinted in our preview. The door installations were astonishing as each one was adorned with endless details that had to be seen to be enjoyed.  Invader was equally entertaining, […]

Auctions: Day & Evening Sales @ Christie’s (London)

AM took a look at Christie’s Summer Post-War and Contemporary Art auctions, taking place tonight, June 30, and tomorrow, July 1, and found a few pieces we would love to put in our collection. Thank goodness more and more auction houses are using the term “Post-War” for what is no longer “Contemporary” art. Let’s hope the galleries and art fairs start to do the same. Our favorite lots from ths auction include Liu Ye’s “Red I” (Lot #2) seen above, estimated at $246,000 – $328,000. […]

Preview: Courtney Brims @ Black Maria Gallery

A relatively new artist to the scene, Courtney Brims, caught our eyes with some preview images to her new show at Black Maria Gallery.  Slated to exhibit her color pencil works on their project wall, the opening is on July 18th.  This will be the Brisbane based artists first show in the US. More images after the jump.

Preview: EINE – “The A – Z of Change” @ Carmichael Gallery

We weren’t sure what to expect when we first got wind of EINE’s Los Angeles solo debut, “The A – Z of Change,” (teased) opening July 9th at Carmichael Gallery, but we are seriously impressed with what he’s delivered.  For this latest body of work on canvas, EINE used a combination of silkscreen and hand-spray techniques to create vibrant pieces containing powerful imagery of individuals standing up against the status quo, a message all too appropriate in today’s times given the unstable political climate in various countries around the globe. We can’t wait to see the entire […]

Interviews: Henry Chalfant & Martha Cooper – “Subway Art: 25th Anniversary”

AM had the pleasure of interviewing Henry Chalfant and Martha Cooper as they celebrated the launch of their amazing book “Subway Art: 25th Anniversary” at Black Rat Press (covered).  Despite an initial print run of just a few thousand back in 1984, “Subway Art” has become a true phenomenon with countless reprints that have inspired thousands of artists and fans around the world. Check out the interview and get a chance to win a signed copy of “Subway Art: 25th Anniversary” after the jump.

Preview: Tin – “Beautiful Imperfections” @ Copro Gallery

We thought we would do a little preview of Tin’s (interviewed) upcoming show “Beautiful Imperfections” at Copro Gallery.  If you are looking forward to some robotic animal and limb goodness like we are, make sure you are there for the July 11th opening.  More images after the jump…

FAME Festival: Conor Harrington x Ceramics

Remember when we showed you the Conor Harrington (interviewed) piece for the upcoming FAME Festival last week?  Well, what we didn’t tell you was that Grottaglie, the town where the festival will be held, is famous for its ceramic tradition dating back hundreds of years.  As part of this years festivities, artists are invited to experiment with local artisans on various projects, which has so far yielded some pretty fantastic ceramic plates by Conor.  This is not the first time urban/street art and ceramics has […]

Art Focus/Video: Cory Arcangel

Cory Arcangel recently had his first auction sale on June 4 at Wright in Chicago.  The piece, a 15-minute movie titled “Super Mario Movie“ (part 1 seen above), is a hacked and reprogrammed video game cartridge that follows the game’s hero as he travels through a corrupted game universe and questions his own existence as his world gradually falls apart.  Deitch Projects where the video was first shown) director Kathy Grayson refers to it as “the most dynamic piece of new media art in [her] […]

Update: Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Sale Results

Yesterday’s Contemporary Day Sale (previewed) at Sotheby’s in London only had a few lots that AM was closely watching, but the results are a good sign for the overall market. In particular, Faile received a much needed boost with their large canvas “New York City 02” (Lot # 169) selling right in the middle of the estimate for 49,250 GBP and the smaller “NYC Butterfly Girl” on wood (Lot # 168) selling for 16,250 GBP, well over the 12,000 GBP high estimate. Faile has not […]
