Streets: Phlegm (London)

It seems the Sheffiled-based Phlegm has headed south again to London for another mural. This newest piece is on the Village Underground wall on Holywell Lane and features some of the long legged creatures he has been painting as of late (see here), as well as one of his classic characters catching a ride. On January 25th, Dan Witz will be making his solo debut with Lazarides at their Rathbone gallery in London. The multi-talented painter and street artist will be sharing paintings from his Prisoner and Mosh Pit series as well as plans to paint one of his prisoner’s images onto London phone boxes. Fans of the NY-based artist will be familiar with his renderings of the frenetic and crowded environment in mosh pits (most recently seen at a New York showing in 2011), but the Prisoner series might be less familiar. For those who missed out on getting the newest KAWS figure in person as part of your Christmas shopping (which is most of you as this release was in Japan), tomorrow will be your second chance. Sketchbook: RIME

For those of you who have been following the street murals from RIME (aka Jersey Joe), you will have seen some of the luscious caricatured females that make it into his imagery (i.e.: here and here). As you would expect, many of these characters make it onto the pages of his sketchbook before going up on the walls – a glimpse of which we can see posted to his instagram account in recent days. After recently seeing some of Barry McGee’s work during Basel Week Miami (here & here), it reminded us to get an update together on some things that we have come across recently from Mr. Twist. Streets: Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada – “Terrestrial Series / Mama Cash” (Amsterdam)

Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada was recently invited to Amsterdam to work on a piece for the International Human Rights Day that helped to launch Vogelvrije Vrouwen (Defend women who defend human rights!). This campaign raises awareness to the plight of Mesoamerican women who are illegally targeted and terrorized for defending human rights in that region and was commissioned by feminist foundation Mama Cash. The large-scale land portrait that spanned almost two football fields (created with the help of 80 volunteers) is part of the Cuban American artist’s ongoing Terrestrial Series. He states […]

It’s time to start winding down our Basel Week Miami coverage here on AM with another look at the PULSE art fair (highlights here). We’ve already shared photos from a couple booths there (Joshua Liner & Jonathan LeVine), and there is a look at a third booth – LeBasse Projects. For this week’s video Rewind, we start things off with news that starting Wednesday and running through Feb. 5, about 3,000 New York City taxis will feature a 30-second video from Ryan McGinley. The short clip, called Varuo, is gleaned from footage from the photographer and director’s video for the Icelandic band Sigur Ros (seen below) and shows a girl skipping barefoot through the streets of NYC with gold glitter streaming from her hair. We start this month’s survey of street art with this sweet new piece from El Mac painted on what looks to be the side of a train car. The LA-based artist painted the portrait as a tribute to his friend and gifted photographer Estevan Oriol.
