Highlights: Recommended Openings For August 20-26

David B. Smith Gallery is the proud host of the new solo exhibition of figurative paintings by artist Kris Lewis this Saturday inside their new gallery space located in Denver. This latest collection of surrealist portraits have been inspired by Lewis’ rich family history. Lewis’ reverence for masters of old is apparent in his depiction of the human figure, which he uses as a vector for hidden stories, delicate emotion and universal truth. His work has been featured in galleries around the world, including Denver, Los […]

Streets: Invader – “Low Fidelity” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

As expected, Invader took his time to visit buildings around the area with his tile work, coinciding with the opening of his solo at Lazarides (covered).  From the look of these new London pieces, he seems to be transitioning to some larger scale work, perhaps making it harder for “collectors” to take them off the streets.  Don’t know how long he is in town for or whether these went up before or after the opening but more and more seem to be popping up. More […]

Streets: Anthony Lister Mural

One of the nicest murals we’ve seen put up in a while comes from Sydney (277 Parramatta Rd to be exact), where Anthony Lister (interviewed) painted over this large billboard. Look for more Lister news to follow as he gets set to open a show at New Image Art in September. Another view as well as some other recent street pieces after the jump…

New Artist Focus: Tristram Lansdowne

The upcoming summer group show (teased/previewed) at Joshua Liner Gallery is packed with heavyweight artists with whom frequent AM readers will already be familiar, such as Dave Kinsey, Joe Sorren and Greg Simkins (interviewed). However, the show will likely be many people’s introduction to several up-and-coming young artists. One of those whom we are particularly interested in is Canadian painter Tristram Lansdowne. More after the jump…

Highlights: Recommended Openings For August 13-19

If you are in New York City this weekend, DO NOT MISS the amazing lineup of artists in Joshua Liner Gallery’s “Summer Group Show,” (previewed) many of whom are showing for the first time with Liner and debuting the goodness to come from upcoming shows. Some great shows going off this weekend, so get out and support your local art scene. The full overview of the onslaught of art after the jump.

Streets: Aiko

Looks like last weekend in Brooklyn, Aiko put up a mural at the Williamsburg Music Center on Bedford Ave & South 5th.  Some of the classic imagery that was on display at her last solo at Joshua Liner Gallery was replicated nicely at this busy location.  Check out more of the images she posted up on her blog after the jump…

Openings & Interviews: Chris Stain & Armsrock – “I Know There Is Love” @ Ad Hoc Art

Last Friday, Chris Stain and Armsrock opened their two-person solo show “I Know There Is Love” at Ad Hoc Art. Their unique individual explorations of the hope and dignity found in everyday urban life while still maintaining the undertones of its challenges and despair paired together very nicely. AM had a chance to interview with both Chris and Armsrock, in which they talk about how their individual bodies of work interact with one another, the inspiration for the show and more. Read the full interview […]

Interviews: Michael Page – “ThankYouGoodbye” @ Varnish Fine Arts

Michael Page’s newest show, “ThankYouGoodbye” (teased), features a body of work inspired by climate change in places like Greenland and Alaska. Sadly, his show that opened at Varnish Fine Art in SF over the weekend will be the last in this space for the gallery. We had a chance to sit down for an interview with Page to talk about the new direction his work is going among other things. Interview after the jump…

Streets: Mark Jenkins

Mark Jenkins has sent us images of his new work from the BELEF Festival in Belgrade. The annual summer arts event, which focuses on the power of contemporary art, theatre and music in public space, aims to counter the closing down of local museums and dwindling attendance at gallery shows, and promote the European city’s potential as a cultural metropolis. More images after the jump…
