Openings: Tom Sachs – “WORKS” @ Sperone Westwater

Last week, AM stopped by the architectural tour de force and New York showspace Sperone Westwater to take in the new solo from Tom Sachs. The painter and sculptor created a vast body of work influenced by a disparate range of historic objects and cultural icons which were recreated and remixed in his signature blend of whimsy and mastery of materials. Included in the exhibition was this reproduction of the award-winning gallery (seen above), rendered in meticulous detail. More openings photos after the jump…

Openings: “La Luz de Jesus 25” Part II

For those who liked the lineup of the first part of La Luz de Jesus’ 25th duo of anniversary show, you will enjoy photos of round two. As we indicated in our preview of the work for the exhibition, the artists invited to celebrate Billy Shire’s illustrious curatorial career are the cream of the crop including Al Farrow with his amazing mosque created with the help of bullets and gun parts. Preview: Tom Sachs – “WORK” @ Sperone Westwater

Tonight, November 4th, the Sperone Westwater Gallery, whose showspace was named the Best New Building in NYC recently, will be hosting a new body of work from Tom Sachs. Drawing from a diverse set of inspirations including “historic objects and cultural iconography – Sèvres porcelain, traditional African symbols, Pop, NASA, and the singer and songwriter James Brown – the hardest working man in show business,” the NY-based artist continues to explore his obsession with the the ritual act of work itself (well documented in these […]

Releases: Joe Ledbetter – 12″ Mutant Bunny (Hand Painted) Part II

Several months ago, we brought your attention to the first set of hand-painted mutant bunny sculptures from Joe Ledbetter. The LA-based painter and art toy mogul has not released the next five of what will be an eventual total of 40. The 12″ figures (sculpted by Pretty in Plastic) are priced at $1500 and should be the crown jewel in the collection of any fan of Ledbetter’s three-dimensional work. For those interested, you can email [email protected]. More detailed photos after the jump…

FIAC Coverage

Following the Frieze week in London (covered here), AM headed off to Paris to visit the FIAC, the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain in Paris at the Grand Palais, host to 168 galleries. While Frieze focuses exclusively on contemporary art, the FIAC also combines early 20th century modern art with the contemporary. Of interest, Karl Lagerfeld designed the booth of Zurich’s Gallery Gmurzynska for the Rebels curated by Isabelle Bscher and featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol as well as Banksy and Scott Campbell. […]

Preview: “13th Hour” @ Last Rites

Halloween is just around the corner, and with it there is sure to be much art-related news. We’ll start things off with the annual 13th Hour group exhibition at Last Rites Gallery. Their roster of artists are well suited to use holiday as their muse because the New York gallery supports purveyors of dark surrealism with shows all year round. This 4th rendition of the show opens on October 28th and will feature a lineup of Shawn Barber, Nick Baxter, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, […]

Openings: TrustoCorp – “Life Cycle” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

Trading in their guerrilla tactics for gallery motifs, TrustoCorp (featured) took to the posh Opera Gallery over the weekend for their third solo exhibition since inception three years ago. Spawned in the wake of a crashing economic system and a Congress rotten to the core, the increasingly ubiquitous and always creative street art collective stormed the SoHo space, transforming it into equal parts bizarro Chucky Cheese and political strategy room gone awry. Building upon their breakout New York solo exhibition last year, Life Cycle (previewed) […]

Streets: Banksy x Occupy London?

What is purportedly a Banksy installation (see the TOX shoutout) has popped up at St.Paul’s Cathedral in support of the Occupy London Movement. The elusive street artist from Bristol’s alleged play on the Monopoly board game was remixed with the theme of the protests – corporate greed and corruption. We’ll see more and more artists get in the game in support of the 99% as these activists spread across the world (see original Occupy Wallstreet with Olek intervention). More photos via Demotix after the jump…

Releases: KAWS – “Joe Kaws” Vinyl Figure

Since the Dissected Milo set was released back in February, KAWS hasn’t released anything on the vinyl toy front, undoubtedly due to focusing on his fine art and recent solo Hold the Line. That will all change next week with the release of his Peanuts homage to Snoopy, aptly dubbed Joe KAWS. The figure, who’s release was effectively set in stone over a year ago with the release of an OriginalFake x Peanuts Joe KAWS t-shirt collaboration to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Charles Schulz […]
