Jen Stark – “To the Power Of” @ Martha Otero

Yesterday, Jen Stark’s To the Power Of exhibition kicked off at the Martha Otero Gallery, her first solo ever in Los Angeles. Featuring the locally-based artist signature papercut sculptures, the complex multi-colored creations charmed attendees to the showing all night long. A couple weeks back, the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver hosted the opening for Gregory Euclide’s latest solo show. Entitled Observing only the ease of my own slipping toward your unknown, the new work sees Euclide continue to walk the thin line between two and three dimensional art. Last year, while AM was in Hong Kong, we had a chance to visit HOW2WORK studios and preview their special collaboration with blue-chip Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Entitled Doggy Radio this unique project is a functional sculpture created by Nara and designed jointly between Sayers Studios & H2W. Showing: Adam Neate – “Dimensional Paintings & Editions” @ Elms Lester

Over the weekend, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for another solo (see 2011) from Adam Neate (interviewed) entitled Dimensional Paintings & Editions. The new body of work consisted of exactly that – his signature three-dimensionaly and richly textured paintings that pop right out of the wall and limited edition offerings. The almost sculptural quality of his pieces really need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Preview: Slinkachu – “Global Model Village” @ Andipa Gallery

Last month, we gave you a heads up on Slinkachu’s new show opening on September 27th at the Andipa Gallery in London. Now, take a look as we have gathered more preview images for Global Model Village, an exhibition featuring the street miniaturist’s installations from cities all over the world. Invader x Jason deCaires Taylor Collaboration

After invading space, finally living up to his full name, Space Invader has decided to explore another frontier – the underwater realm. With an assist from Jason deCaires Taylor, whose underwater sculptural coral reefs and photography was featured in a recent show in New York, the French street tilist has affixed his classic imagery on the side of one of the reefs in Cancun adding another exotic locale notch to his belt of conquest. Openings: Bäst – “Germs Tropicana” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

Last week, the Opera Gallery hosted an opening for a rare solo from Bäst at their New York location entitled Germs Tropicana. The show featured somewhat of a new direction for the Brooklyn-based street artist as he delivered pieces that were dense with his collage-style imagery, some of which were circular in nature. Teeming with his signature pop iconography, they resembled giant petri dishes – hence the title of the show. Streets: JR (Hong Kong)

With his show opening very soon (September 18th) in Hong Kong, French street artist JR has completed another mural for his Inside Out project. This new long mural was installed on the roof of one of the footpaths of the IFC and can be seen from various viewpoints above the piece. Also, of interest to those who plan on attending the opening at Emmanuel Perrotin is plans for a photo booth at the space that fans can use to participate in the Inside Out project themselves. Martha Otero Gallery will be presenting Jen Stark’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles (where she currently lives and works) at the end of the month. The title of the show, To the Power Of, refers to her interest in mathematics with the term being a “statement of exponential growth which also infers the definition of ‘power’ as both the possession of physical or mental control and the fortitude to act decisively.” Anyone who has seen her stunning paper cut sculptures in person can attest to the […]

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “New Work” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this last weekend, the NY-based Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened a new showing at the Mark Moore Gallery. Bringing with him several tondos as well as his irregularly shaped canvases, Matsu filled the project room with a juxtaposition of eastern and western imagery. Mixing things up, the new body of work also included two works on paper that he placed on a hand-painted wall as well as a re-cast of a 18th century erotic Chinese porcelain figure (customized for the Los Angeles area) that he encased in resin.
